Speakerphone performance?

Preface: I'm a total newb to the Liquid E and Android.

I just picked up a Liquid E a few days ago. I haven't tried any mods yet just running the 2.1 version that came on the phone.

I've found the outgoing voice quality to be substandard. I've recorded to my own voicemail so I can hear myself and while the earpiece quality sounds okay, talking normally in the mic sounds muddled and difficult to understand and also a little on the quiet side.

The speakerphone function is worse. It barely picks up my voice at all. I've found other speakerphone apps (voice recorder or voice commands) also barely pick up sound from the mic.

I'm wondering if others have the same problem or if it's a defect with my phone. If this is common, is it at all improved with any of the leaked or custom firmwares? If I can't get decent voice quality from the phone it's pointless for me. I may as well sell it as soon as possible and go back to my dumb phone which sounds amazing.

I must say my mic works very well even when i barely wisper and the phone is about 4-5 dm away.
