Gmail accounts - can I remove the original gmail account for another one without a factory reset

If I go to Accounts&Sync in settings I've added a second gmail account that I want to use for the phone. If I try and remove the first account I get a message saying this account is required by some applications and the only way to remove is to do a factory rest - which I really don't want to do!

Is there any danger in using my main account as the sign-in account on the phone (for Apps Market etc) - I don't want to use it if it's going to attract more spam etc. I'm just trying to get my head around the integration between gmail and the phone in how the data is used so I was thinking it might be safer if I create a specific separate account for the Apps Market sign-in and then just add my other account for email sync.

I'm new to Android so still finding my way through how it all works

I'm not sure if you can, unless you can find the file that stores the details in /system or were ever it is and remove it.

Open Menu, and go to Settings.

Select Applications and then go to Manage Applications.

Look for the app “Google Apps” and tap it.

Now tap the “Clear data” button.

Now, in the Notifications (top of the screen) you will see a new notification.

Tap “Your account must be updated”.

Now enter your new Google account info.

Reboot your phone and you’re all done!

This method does NOT clear your call log.

Thanks for that R-A-V. I've gone into Google Apps but the Clear data button is greyed out

I think it might be the Gmail app itself that you hit 'clear data' on?

I've cleared the Gmail data but still no joy. I think I'm going to do a factory reset to get it back to where I want so I can try rooting it and taking the Orange crap off. Thanks anyway.

Is there any danger in using a primary/main Gmail account as your user account on Android? I've seen on some other forums that a few people recommend setting up a "dummy" gmail address just for the phone account and then adding the main Gmail address as a secondary account just for email/syncing etc.
