Shall I post update.zips only?

Quite a few Android newbies seem to be getting lost / confused in the MCRi root / flash process.

I'm considering just posting the ROMs in traditional update format, thereby mandating clockworkmod recovery install.

Sound like a reasonable idea? Maybe coupled with a 'step by step flashing for newbies post'?

Paul,

That would be an excellent idea. I did have some problems when I first followed your guide. However, reading between the lines I managed to root and load the custom rom OK.

Please do Paul, and put a paragraph in the welcome pm in LARGE font, telling how to use the search facility :)

Will.

Definitely update.zip will be the best and the easiest way to install ROMs. Just need someone to write guide for newbies :)

Yes, stick to update.zip only. It'll be a lot easier for most users. And perhaps a small guide showing how to upgrade a ROM using ROM Manager.

And it allows for easy nandroid back-ups :)

Exactly. That is why I like it.

Install ROM from SD Card > select the zip > Check "Backup existing ROM" and check "Wipe Data and Cache" if you want to do a fresh install. Job done.

How hard can it be? ;)

Yeah... remember we didn't have that option initially. :)

So this would supersede the r* ROM releases?

I take it updates would be applied where applicable in the kitchens too? i.e core, apps etc..?

I'd say yes too, its simple installing roms with update.zip files. Now we have clockwork its simples.

No, it's simple posting on the releases in update zip instead of MCRi images too. I've actually updated the topics now to reflect this.

with some of the posts on here, you probably need to post a self downloading self executing .apk which uses the same exploit as universal root!

I have been able to root my blade by following pauls video tutorial, the problem was that when I decided to get a "baked" rom I was unsure what to do with the zip file I downloaded. I incorrectly assumed that I would rename it "mcri-system.tar.gz" but have since discovered "update.zip".

I am a proper noob at this stuff but am muddling my way through the process.

I have found that there is such a wealth of information spread over a number of threads, some of which are very long, that it is difficult to remember where to find the snippet I am looking for (even using the "search"). :)

It would be worth it for ClockworkRecovery alone, as many folks seem to think that they've bricked their phones when they haven't, and could do with an easy way to roll back, update or whatever. It certainly helped me yesterday when I had a massive scare and only had access via fastboot ;)

Anyway, bloody hell Paul and others, it's pretty obvious you know your stuff so your word on this is pretty much gospel :)

Sorry if I'm being stupid, but I didn't think we could use ROM Manager since it didn't detect Paul's ClockworkMod as official. When I try to do anything from inside it, it asks to install ClockworkMod and gives options for Pulse Mini, Streak and Pulse. Will it be able to be used in the future or am I just missing something?

I'd say it would be the best if you offer both, MCR and MCRi. If you know what you're doing MCRi is the better solution imho.

Best regards,

Anyone remember the Pulses fix for this? Put the .img in the ClockWork download folder, then say it was a Pulse Mini, which would then flash the image on the SD card (which was the Pulse Maxi's) and ClockWork would think we had the recovery installed.

Agreed.

Part of being a n00b is not knowing the right term to search for!

@ Paul (mainly, I think because its "policy", and off-topic, but it is relevant)

It'd be really really GREAT to have important pronouncements kept very separate from mixed discussions incorporating both Q&A and 'delta' clarifications.

To improve the signal-to-noise ratio, I believe there needs to be -

a "release" (updated/edited as and when - but kept 'pure' info) A thread locked to all except illuminati.

discussion/troubleshooting/Q&A thread(s) associated with that release

and FAQs extracted from those discussions and posted alongside the 'release' -- so that the 'release' post has its own neighbouring FAQs (and likely pointers to other pre-existing and relevant FAQs) but importantly keeping the inherently noisy discussions that generate the FAQs slightly apart from the gospels.

Regarding the discussion at hand, it seems an important point to me that zip files have their own integrity checking -- thus hopefully entirely avoiding all the very odd problems resulting from people using a corrupt download because of ignorance of MD5 hashes ...

I have held off installing a custom rom as I am confused by the two methods with information split between threads and tutorials seemingly explaining a method that does not appear to be the best anymore.

We have people posting the clockworkmod is not as good as the MCRi method, clockworkmod does not work and vice versa.

It would be great if there was a simple guide on the correct (and best) method to install a custom rom from a new phone.

If I understand correctly I should follow these instructions http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...online-kitchen/ but follow the link at the start of the thread to do this url first http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...rkmod-recovery/ (this is the new bit you MUST install clockworkmod)

The whole process is probably simple to people familiar with process but for someone completely new it is a bit confusing. Simple things like adb is still confusing me do you get this application in the zip download from the threads listed above or do you have to download the sdk as other threads say etc?

Theres also is no mention on whether you should and how is the best method of connecting the phone the computer. It is obvious to me know it needs to be connected by the USB cable but no mention on whether drivers are needed how to check it is connected correctly etc.

Actually after writing this reply it is coming clearer.

Great site btw. I hope to sign up for a Ad Free membership soon once I am more confident on install my own rom. I hope r4 will appear soon.

TIA

there's a fix for this posted in the clockwork thread which involves creating the settings file in the clockwork directory

Are MCRi versions no longer being offered?

I've got this method nailed, so I'll need to learn the clockwork method if the MCRi's are pulled!!! lol :)

Same I found MCRi so simple, put ".tar.gz" on SD card and reboot, all done!
