A2SD+ and the internal storage problem

Hi guys,

Although I have an Ext3 partition (partitioned with Rom Manager) and a2sd+ (from the r8 Modaco Rom with Sense), apps aren't fully installed on the ext3 partition because the internal storage still decreases.

I read through the forums and it seems to be a normal behavior that some parts of the app still remain in the internal storage. I installed the custom Rom with a2sd+ to be able to install more apps in the first place. But now again I've come to a point where the system gives me the message that I'm running out of internal memory.

Ok, I have a lot of apps installed, including many games and Navigon and Google Earth and my latest storage killer Fennec. But I mean come on, do the guys at HTC really expect me only to install like 30 apps and after that the storage is full? That doesn't make sense at all. I love Android, but in this case I really envy the iPhone users who can install as many apps as they want... That's really sad, I can't understand why the phone manufacturers and Android developers didn't think of that and let the iPhone have such an important competitive advantage by building phones with so little internal memory.

Can't something be done against this? Like Paul including another hack in his next Rom that moves additional parts of the system to the ext3 partition?

My SD card is always in my phone, I never take it out, so it would be no problem if the whole OS was installed on the ext3 partition (I know this won't work because of the SD not being mounted at boot, but you get my point).

Thanks and regards

I totally agree with you. Although I have enough free space on my EXT3 partition, I'm not able to install apps anymore. The even more annoying thing is that as long as my phone keeps complaining about running out of internal memory, gmail (among others) does not show new e-mails anymore.

As Johnny Doe said, is there anything what can be done against this?

im running out of space as well, using a2sd+ too. btw, iphone has a limitation also, but not in mbytes, just the number of installed applications. in ios 3.x the max number of applications was 180, in ios4, i dont know the exact number. (it was 148 before 3.0.x)

for me its one of the biggest lack in android. i have to uninstall/install few apps all the time.

We know where the app info is stored. In /Data. Isn't it possible to move /Data to the sdcard as well? Can some of the guru's please advise why we haven't done this yet? Is there a limitation I'm not seeing? I figure if we can link the app folder to sdcard can't we link the data there as well?

I'm using a free app called "move cache for root" from Mikhael Costa, that allows moving some caches to sd.

I moved browser, gmaps, streetview, and gmail caches to sd (not market yet).

this helped me claim some 10 or 15 Mb without any noticeable performance or reliabity issues.

I'm using a2sd, not sure if the a2sd+ already moves the caches.
