Guest StevenHarperUK Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 A question to the ROM developers: is 24 MB as the default heap size enough? The device has 500 MB to play with - Would we get any better performance if we set this to 64MB Its set at /System/build.prop dalvik.vm.heapsize=24 Another Question to anyone How can I try to change this myself? Whats the best (and free) way to edit this file? Will a reboot pick it up?
Guest Rem1x Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 (edited) You can use an app like root explorer to edit it on the phone, or pull the file using ADB, then push it on after editing it. EDIT: Or just use this app ^^ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803470 Edited October 9, 2010 by Rem1x

Guest Rem1x Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Short answer, no. Increasing heap size increases overhead and reduces performance. I've set it to 32MB, feels better, the gallery feels much faster. Mind you, it's probably just a placebo!
Guest Simon O Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 (edited) Just got 408 on Quadrant, I'm pretty sure that's higher :) 32mb is ok but anything higher slows things down. I'm using 32mb ;) Quadrant 402 Edited October 9, 2010 by flibblesan

Guest jsplace Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I run with 32Mb and find it makes a difference, but... Has anyone actually tested for the optimum values? I.e it was found after VERY extensive testing by lots of people that my Hero with Cronos Froyo 1.3 works best with a heap size of 38Mb

What kind of tests should we be running? - Any Ideas? Edited October 10, 2010 by StevenHarperUK
Guest harmohn Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Browser scrolling etc seems snappier too at 32Mb - thanks for the headsup fellas :)
Guest StevenHarperUK Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I have a guilty secret : I have upped it to 38MB. I think LauncherPro no doesn't milli hang when I zoom, but maybe its placebo - will keep you posted.
Guest abbas_sheikh Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Another vote for 32MB. feels faster.
Guest glossywhite Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Another vote for 32MB. feels faster. +1 - seems faster, AND my camera app banding has vanished! :)

Guest amoebauk Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 I did a little testing; 24mb = 332 32mb = 359 38mb = 369 50mb = 374

Guest clonmult Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) what are the 2nd figures? Performance as measured by quadrant. My first run just gave 354 with the 32mb VM size. Interesting variances in performance. *eta* re-run after closing a few apps, and its up to 368. Close down a bunch more, and it was down to 347. Edited October 11, 2010 by clonmult
Guest weba Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 +1 here, following your recommendations guys (increasing to 32mb). UI animations are even slicker now.
