Since iv been using my SF iv been getting used to charging it twice sometimes 3 times in a day and have to admit the battery life had me concerned. I deleted apps that i presumed to be the cause, switched off all autosync for apps/widgets... but the fast drain on battery persisted. So just put it down to being an android quip.

Yesterday lunchtime i switched off '3G' and also 'Background Data' and the difference is night and day, battery life seems to have doubled ;)

Im about to test which out of the 3G or background data is the culprit but i have a feeling the 3G is the cause since at home my 3g struggles to keep a stable connection and constantly switches between GPRS & 3G and sometimes an 'Edge' signal is thrown in for good measure :)

Can anyone clarify or confirm that the 3g/background data Switched On seriously depletes battery

cheers

Mobile Network/Background Data enabled...last charged Friday afternoon, phones just been sat doing nothing much..received/sent about a dozen texts, received 1 phone call and made 1 phone call on it, totalling around 10 minutes of talking, (fecking wife has me decorating the bathroom, so I have been ignoring the phone), the only tinkering has been to increase the Java VM size to 32meg, got a couple of Google Talk notifications, and the battery is sitting at 35% currently.

That sounds healthy mate...When you say 'mobile network enabled' is this a stable 3G connection?

Im wondering if the 3g radio continually switching to gprs and vice versa could be having an affect on the battery

cheers

Yeah, it's a stable 3G data connection..

I would have thought 3G would drain more though?, or am I :)

The only thing i have i guess, running that would need it, at the moment, is the beautiful widget for the weather, the small one, with 1 hour updates, IIRC, the Google Talk Notifications still came through, I opened the page up on the phone, read them, replied much later via pc.

Haven't seen my 3G connection drop for weeks now, the only time i have seen it go down is when o2's network has a brain fart, and mobile network goes down, but I guess everyone gets that once in a while.

The first couple of days the battery ran down quite quickly, with the unlocking, rooting/flashing to Modaco's R3 rom, and the general playing around installing/uninstalling apps and setting it up, but apart from that, it's been fine, apart from Handscent tearing through my battery, and ****ing up my settings, but once i got rid of that, no issues.

I think thats the problem tho. My connection to network is is unable to lock on to either 3g or gprs and is flitting between both, Im thinking that while this constant searching for a 3g network is causing the drain...it can lock on 3g for minutes at a time but the phone has to be positioned very akwardly over my head and held very still lol

I can only assume this is the case since now the phone is switched to 2g only, the battery seems much better

I imagine that since your 3g connection is a stable lockon then your 3g radio is not continually searching/switching & ultimately putting less a demand on the battery

i could be barking right up the wrong tree though :)

Should say also that my 3g connection is great when im outdoors...just piss poor when indoors

Thanx for replying tho mate. Your post kinda adds fuel to what i was already thinking....ie...stable data connection = decent battery

That is a very valid point and, in fact, constant mode changes affects the battery life.
