Guest DanielSlaughter Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Hey, I've purchased the Streak from Optus and while it hasn't arrived yet, I'm curious to find out a couple of things from anyone who has the aussie version. FYI, this will be my first Android device after spending a few years with iPhones, so I'm new to rooting and such, but I'm not a tech noob so I'll pick it all up pretty easily. I don't want to use the Streak on Optus, because Optus sucks... is there any way I can unlock the phone by rooting or any other software modification? (I'm really trying not to say "jailbreak" here!). Not too interested in upgrading to Froyo yet, I'm happy to wait for the official upgrade... Just really need to unlock the carrier so I can use another network. A link to a guide would be greatly appreciated! If unlocking isn't as simple with this device as it is with iPhones (and that's certainly looking to be the case after searching through the forums), do you think a Rebel Sim Card would work for Australian networks? Thanks for your time!
Guest everunman Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Welcome fellow aussie, most of us here have imported streaks from the Uk that are locked to o2 network. I purchased a rebelsim, this works great here, i can see no reason why it wouldnt work on a locked Optus streak, i can use Optus, Telstra and 3 so far so good
Guest springah Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 are the optus streaks even locked? i'll try a voda sim today some time..
Guest DanielSlaughter Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 I've heard Optus only lock their pre-paid handsets but I figure it would be locked because it's exclusive to them until next year. I'm keen to see how you go putting a voda sim in yours, cause I want to use a voda sim in mine :) Thanks again!
Guest PaulVlagsma Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Telstra NextG won't work on your Optus Streak. What's wrong with Optus, except that its 3G is slower than Telstra?
Guest springah Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Telstra NextG won't work on your Optus Streak. What's wrong with Optus, except that its 3G is slower than Telstra? Optus sucks. Its not the 3G/NextG thing, it can just be a terrible network sometimes. I'll admit its heaps better now, but when i the iphone 4 first popped i could hardly browse. GPRS was quicker at browsing websites than 3G. Trying out the other sim in a couple of mins...

Are you using the Streak on Optus springah? Any issues with data or call drops? Even though they're improving their service I'd rather stick with voda. They've been good to me for years! ...Despite not stocking the Streak until 2011!

I'm using my Optus Streak on Virgin, which is Optus really. Data has been fine, calls have been fine too. The Optus Streak is not locked, so you won't have a problem using it with any network. While it won't work with NextG, it will still work on Telstra's 2.1GHz network. Oh, rooting is incredibly easy. Just download Universal Androot from the Market and hit Go Root. That's it. :) Edited October 12, 2010 by wired
