Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 I am aware that there are threads mentioning how to install certain ROMs however I just can't seem to get them to work. I got my Orange San Francisco yesterday, and I've so far just unlocked it. What is the next step? I want to get rid of the Orange branding and use the default Android OS without the garbage. I've seen certain threads (Clockwork or something) which say you should power the device on holding the up volume button... ok I did that and got to the screen with the green Android dude. I then proceed to plug in my device to my computer (running Mac OSX). The next step is to "Extract the fastboot zip file" ...what does that mean? Ok, I've extracted it to the desktop but I don't see how that does anything -- or am I supposed to extract the fastboot.zip to the phone itself? I can't extract the fastboot.zip to the phone because the device doesn't come up when I plug it in. Even if I extract it to the desktop, I can't seem to get the commands in terminal to work anyway. I'm sorry for starting this thread, I've probably missed something out and it's probably really obvious to those who have already gone through this -- I've never done anything like this before. Thank you, Eildor
Guest Gibbo501 Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) The whole process requires some computing knowledge. You need to be comfortable with downloading and extracting the files from ZIP files as well as using the command prompt, and following the instructions. There are a few threads which detail this, one even includes a video. If you can't do that I'd recommend giving it to a friend with some IT knowledge, or getting it unlocked at a shop. Guest rjm2k Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 I thought there was even a video showing you the modding process??
Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Never mind, I think I can work it out. Thanks.
Guest kissofjudas Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 I thought there was even a video showing you the modding process?? with the advent of such a low priced well specced Android phone, there will be many new subscribers, who whilst having little or no knowledge of this subject would relish updating/modding their phones. While there are many well documented guides, it's obvious that the guide creator is knowledgable as in the guides there is an assumption created unintentionally that the reader has some knowledge, when in fact in many cases this is not so. If anyone can take these guides and rework them with the assumption that the reader has very limited understanding, I'm sure many more would benefit. They can't be too simple (the guides that is :) )

I'm copying over the "r3-update-modacocustomrom-blade-signed.zip" to the SD card... I'm copying it anywhere hopefully it doesn't matter. Then going to go into the clockwork recovery mode and try installing it -- I think that's the right way of doing it, not sure.
Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Done, all orange branding gone. Thanks.
Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) Why do I now get the modaco logo come up every time I start the phone? Edited October 13, 2010 by Eildor
Guest hillmie87 Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Why do I now get the modaco logo come up every time I start the phone? It's incorporated in the custom rom that u're using. If you search on the forum, there'll be a thread explaining how you could change the modaco logo to something else. but tbh, i dont really mind having the logo. I'd rather have it sit there quietly than bricking my phone. :)
Guest Matty-p Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Why do I now get the modaco logo come up every time I start the phone? Well it It used to be the Orange logo Paul removed it and. put his logo in its place I keep it there cos. I like it and he runs a good site but you can change it to any picture you like

Thank you, Eildor Hi mate. I am also new on this "rooting" stuff and i will order one SF very soon. Can you explain to me how you did with the fastboot zip file? I know how to compress files and unpack them etc but i didn't understand that part :S thanks!
Guest flash2004 Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Guys, please search the forum before creating such redundant threads...

Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 @ hillmie87 & Matty - Doesn't sound very newbie friendly, guess I'll have to leave it as it is for now.

Guest Eildor Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 (edited) So suppose your computer username was John, and you extracted fastboot and you now have the fastboot folder and the clockworkmod file on your desktop, and you are using Mac OS X, you would type into terminal: /Users/John/Desktop/fastboot/fastboot-mac flash recovery /Users/John/Desktop/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img I think that's correct anyway.
