Guest tcpaulh Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 How do I go about updating pre-installed apps? For example I've tried to upgrade to launcher pro and also to re-install google maps but in both cases it fails. Sorry if there's a guide somewhere. I've not found it...
Guest Gibbo501 Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Remove the download from the queue in the market. Close the app and try later. It seems to be a common fault. Most of my apps download immediately but some don't - it took 4 days to get Google Skymap.
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 I find that for apps that came pre-installed as part of the rom/zip package there is no option to download or uninstall from the market. Also there is no option to uninstall from settings. Re-installing from an apk using Apps Installer also fails. As I understand it, forcefully ripping out pre-installed apps from root can cause 'registration' problems so perhaps this is not a good idea either? If all this is the case then surely having a rom with pre-installed apps is a handicap, never being able to upgrade without installing a new rom? Of course I hope I've got it all wrong ;-) but if not then why isn't it common practice to post 'naked' optimised roms without all the pre-installed stuff?
Guest Sebastian404 Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 My understanding of how it 'should' work is that if there is a newer version of an app, you can download it to your phone and install it into the Data partition, the phone will then use that newer version over the built in version. if you want to remove the apps from your System partition, remount the phone and delete the app from the /system/app directory, but as tcpaulh mentions that can cause problems.
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) I thought the same Seb but using Paul's R3 I get the issues noted above ie no option to download/install from market, no option to uninstall from settings and failure when trying to install from APK. Does upgrading to the Data partition work with your ROM? If so I'll be on it like a shot. :) Edited October 15, 2010 by tcpaulh

However, on a nice fresh install of the most recent de-orangeated R4 build, when I navigate to Google Maps in the marketplace it says it's installed, and it wont let me uninstall it, just open it I've checked Street View and Voice Search, they are all the same, this is sort of what I'd expect since the version built in is the most recent version. I guess the way to tell would be to downgrade to the stock rom and see if it lets you install the newer version of the Maps.... Edited October 15, 2010 by Sebastian404
