Iv been following this site for 3 days and having just bought my san francisco yesterday - I unlocked it for the o2 network.

I wish to Root it but reading all the threads and comments here and the hotukdeals website (people are reporting following the instructions but with no success, some phones even no longer working) I am scared of bricking it as im not certain what needs to be done first..

Im just a little confused...could someone proof-read this and tell me if im on the right track?

The files I have downloaded are:

Fastboot.zip (which I have unzipped and placed in a new folder called "fastboot". I have placed this in the c:\ directory.

recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade ( I have put this in the fastboot folder also - is this correct?)

r3-update-modacocustomrom-blade-signed (whats this? do I need this?)

boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r3 (Im presuming this is the actual rom? I have also placed this in the fastboot folder.

----

Now when i go to command prompt I do this:

cd\ (followed by enter)

cd fastboot (followed by enter which gives me fastboot>)

fastboot-windows flash boot boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r3.img

Its at this point the system hangs and stays on "waiting for device" (the phone is connected btw to the laptop)

I am running windows 7 ultimate...I have read others are having this problem also? Have I done something wrong?

Thing is in pauls instructions he says to take out the battery and then turn it on holding volume up which gets me to the green android screen. Pauls instructions then say to connect the cable to the pc which I do however windows fails to installs the drivers for it. Its after this point I try do the above commands....Im guessing windows isnt recognising the phone?

Funny thing is I have followed previous instructions by Brins0 here and installed them: http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&amp...t&p=1437037

This allowed windows to detect my SF everytime I connected it and I could browse its contents..so i presumed the drivers were installed?

I havnt installed Fibblesans drivers however? Could this be why it hangs? (fibbles post: http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&amp...&p=1437037)

I am currently download ubuntu to create a live CD and try do it through that...its getting more and more complicated...

Am I on the right track?

-Thanks

Honestly your best hope is to burn an Ubuntu Live CD

You can do it just running off the CD

My Guide : http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...m-from-scratch/

Includes instructions on burning the disk.

Steve

Hey Steve,

Your guide is exactly what I have been following and I am very greatful for it. I will try with ubuntu...I have never used it before so thats going to be another learning curve lol..

Can I install it with Win 7 installed at the same time? I really dont want to get rid of it.. so with the ability to run both on my lappy?

You should really just Run in LIVE mode off the CD

The LIVE mode lets you run Ubuntu just of the CD without installing.

Yes you can install Ubuntu on your Laptop along side windows

Yes the Install sequence makes it very easy

Yes I recommend you do install Ubuntu : Once you have tried the live cd and make sure you like it / supports your hardware well.

Please note in Ubuntu you just right click on the ZIPS and choose extract.

Steve,

would appreciated your advice;

Well iv downloaded ubunto and running on it as we speak. I have the fastboot folder on my desktop.

Cant seem to figure out why but the command isnt working in the terminal? Im typing it exactly as youve said:

I open the terminal and type in:

cd Desktop/fastboot

and that takes me into the directory.

I then type in exactly as stated:

sudo ./fastboot-linux flash boot boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r3.img

And it says command not found? what am I doing wrong?

O_O

Edit:

Just to update - I finally did it!

It seems the problem everyone is having with the "waiting for device" on windows is the drivers are messing up when using bootloader mode and recovery mode.

These drivers fixed the problem (mostly anyways): http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...rivers-and-adb/

It worked after I installed that driver for the second device on my device manager.

This allowed bootloader mode to be recognised as prior windows would not pick it.

Once updated I followed the instructions exactly upto stage 3. On the clockwork recovery again this problem resurfaced and I couldnt transfer the modaco custom rom over because the laptop wouldnt let me mount while it was in the menu....luckily I have a microSD card adapter and I simply used that to transfer the modaco rom over and put the sdcard back into the phone and just followed the steps...It worked.

The phone started off slow but seems quicker than before.

I would advise noobs like myself out there that wish to do this, read everything very carefully and make sure firstly the drivers are installed correctly and you see your device manager pick up:

*Android ADB interface

*Android Composite ADB interface

You need both otherwise bootloader mode wont work.

Hope this helps...damn its 2am in the morning...time for sleep.

Steve - many thanks for your help, it was invaluable and also my thanks to paul...wherever he is..

It sounds as though you have connected the San Francisco while booted normally rather than in Fastboot mode. When the phone's booted normally it doesn't respond to Fastboot commands.

You need to turn on the San Fran holding Volume Up to enter the mode (the green Android will not disappear in this mode).

Fastboot works just fine in Windows 7, no need for Ubuntu for this.

no believe me it was in done properly but still wouldnt work.

My previous post states it would remain on the android screen but windows wouldnt recognise the phone at all this point.

Turned it on holding volume up numerous times and got the green android to stay but just wouldnt recognise it - the drivers were the reason, I needed the correct ones (and i tried 3 different ones!) only then it worked.
