HELP - phone not working while roaming

Hi guys,

Hope you can help - got the SF 3 weeks ago, great phone and in fact have put the BB 8900 down to use this by choice.

Due to the great work by Paul and others I have put R2 on it using the MCRi method, all went fine but...

I am now in Malta for 2 weeks and the phone doesn;t seem to allow me to log on to a Roaming network...

Before anyone asks about being Roaming enabled I have had it working fine in Italy a month ago and have had roaming enabled for about 13 years!!!

Anyone able to help - I have my laptop and a weak WiFi signal near where I am staying but I need the phone ASAP!!! Do I need to flash it with a stock ROM or something? Something else needs enabling?

I can see the networks but when I click to join them it says that the SIM wont let me connect. I also have a small signal which looks like a SIM with a small cross in it in the bar at the top...

Cheers,

Matt

Do you know which networks are partnered to your home network ? Just because you can see them doesn't mean your UK network has a roaming agreement with them, the phone will show all the networks it can detect.

Also, are you on contract or payg? Some roaming networks don't allow payg while they will allow contract...

I'm on a contract SIM, worked fine in the UK....

Also checked with Orange about the networks and I should be fine to use them all...

Anything else to check??

Well, yeah. It will work in the UK, but that's not an indications of anything when you've a roaming problem I'm afraid.

Have you changed anything on the acc since you were away last? or had a new sim card ?

Soft reset of the phone, (with the phone on, take the battery off. Leave for a minute or so, put back together), might get it going.

If that doesn't get it working, it just might not work at all. When I want to the US last years despite setting everything up and checking it all the setting on the server and acc screens (I work for the network), it just would not work over there. While my wifes payg (on the same network) worked from the the off. Sometimes they just won't attach to a roaming network and nothing you can do with sort it...

In Malta you only have Go and VodaFone as your service providers. I'm not sure even 3G is available there, so you may get voice roaming but not high-speed data. My recommendation is go to any local shop and buy a local SIM (should only cost your around 10 euros) and try that. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with that and will end up costing you less.

Steve, thanks for the quick reply...

I actually have a 'No SIM Card' warning in the Status bar... I have just done a factory reset and still the same...

I tried the SIM in another phone and it was fine... Roaming, made a call, all fine...

Is it worth flashing it again? No damage to the phone at all - was in my pocket on the flight - did Airplane mode, then turned that off after we landed and all the problems started...

Argh!!!

That's not good !

You could try cleaning the contacts on the sim socket in the phone and on the sim itself (a cottonbud is good for this, but don't leave any bits behind).

I can't see flashing it would do anything, but as an avenue of last resort... why not !

Umm, when things are going haywire, we sometimes make it worse ... so ...

Are you sure that you replaced the sim the right way round? (nibbled corner goes in last, not first)

Has anyone else been roaming successfully with the Modaco rom ?

Going back to stock just might be worth a try of all else fails.

After that, its Orange Customer Service ...

CS can't do anything if you're roaming. If the phones not responding they can't send any sim updates to it to do anything.

It's odd, the phone can see the networks but not attach to them? If could just be a random roaming bug, as I said above, it can happen to anyone anywhere. Its just one of those things when you leave your home network. . .

Been thinking this over.

Originally the phone is supplied (by mail at least) barred from the Orange network.

That would seem to be based on the phone ID rather than the sim.

Phones "unlocked" still need "activation" before they can be used with an Orange contract sim.

Its unlocked-to-Orange by the phone ID -- NOT the sim.

Now, its a PAYG phone.

IIRC Orange PAYG phones are supplied not just international-calling-barred, but also roaming-barred.

These have to be "activated" just like for use on Orange's home network.

Like you, I'd presumed that these bars would be sim-based ... BUT if the roaming bar were based on your phone's ID (just like the initial bar from Orange at home) then it would explain your problem - and no amount of reflashing, etc is going to do the trick.

You seem to be on Orange, so its quite possible that your "Orange PAYG handset" is going to be (still) barred from Orange's roaming partners.

I could believe that the local operator on getting the roaming request via an Orange sim, would refer back to Orange UK, and Orange's computer could easily be saying 'No - no roaming with that phone'.

With a local sim (or a non-Orange UK one), this wouldn't apply because they wouldn't have anything 'against' that phone ID.

Its going to have to be done by Orange, I fear. No idea whether it would require insertion of an Orange PAYG sim.

Sounds reasonable if it requires a "sim update".

But if the bar is actually on Orange UK's computers against that ID roaming, would that need a "sim update"? (And this isn't the original sim ...)

If you can contact Orange CS, it ought not to harm to ask ...

BUT you certainly do need the phone to recognise that it has a sim installed ... !

Thanks for the all the help, though having rooted the phone the bl**dy thing still says no SIM!!!

If anyone has any ideas then I am all ears...

Failing that, as the SIM works in another phone, I'll root it with a standard Orange ROM and send it back to Orange... This is seriously depressing, has anyone else gone abroad with a contract SIM in the phone and had any success?

I think that added detail is probably highly significant!
