Update Gmail system app?

Is there a way to update the stock gmail app included in the ROM?

It doesn't show up in my apps list and I can't find it within the app itself.

I understand that the very latest one is Froyo only however someone mentioned that there are newer versions available for 2.1 with features like copy/paste within an email.

I have just found a Gmail App 2.3 source, pushed it to the phone but it doesn't work. I think it's going to need to be decompiled to see if there is any checks in there.
