Guest tcpaulh Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 I've been trying to get this working for 6 days. On all available roms, my data connection dies completely upon launch of google maps or google navigation. It doesn't just fail, it kills internet access via the browser. The only trick I've discovered to get internet access back is to enable/disable airplane mode. Maps and navigation still fail dismally though. Question: Could someone with a tesco pay monthly sim please try and access google maps and/or navigation and let me know if it works for them...? Today's my last day under distance selling regs for sending the phone back. Of course I can send it back if it's faulty later than that but proving it may be a pain. Thanks!
Guest dav_dako Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) Works fine for me. Does data work ok for everything else? Edit: should add that was a test on maps only and not navigation Edited October 18, 2010 by dav_dako
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Works fine for me. Does data work ok for everything else? Good news. Thanks for the reply. Yes, data works fine for everything else. May I ask what settings you have? Mine are on a user defined APN using recommended settings:- APN = prepay.tesco-mobile.com proxy= 193.113.200.195 port=8080 username=tescowap pass=password have tried with APN Type = "default" without quotes and just blank. Also have some mms settings which are:- mmsc = http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002 mms proxy = 193.113.200.195 mms port = 8080 I do have additional APN's showing in the list:- O2 UK O2 MMS Postpay O2 MMS Prepay O2 UK MMS Does this all look pretty much the same as your setup or did you not create a customised APN? Thanks again :)
Guest dav_dako Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 I set my own APN but the settings are the same as yours. I'll just list mine exactly as they are on the phone. Name = Tesco APN = prepay.tesco-mobile.com proxy = 193.113.200.195 port = 8080 username = tescowap pass = password Server = <not set> mmsc = http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002 mms proxy = 193.113.200.195 mms port = 8080 mcc = 234 mnc - 10 Authentication type = <not set> APN type = default Unfortunately I can't remember or find where I got these settings from although, as I say, they appear to be the same. I've received an MMS today that doesn't want to open, so I'm not 100% convinced these settings are spot on. Hope this helps you in some way.
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) Cheers, exactly the same as me then even the mcc and mnc stuff I didn't mention originally. And you're on the £10/month 500minutes,500mb,unlimited texts service? If so then I guess there's nothing between us I guess unless you generally get something apart from a G or 3G or 3G+ connection according to the icon at the top? (I've had all of these and launching maps/navigation kills each of them) Are you on Original,R3,R4 or Sebastian's ROM? Bugger, it looks like I'm gonna have to send it back, unless there's other stuff I can try. Edited October 18, 2010 by tcpaulh
Guest oh!dougal Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) I've been trying to get this working for 6 days. On all available roms, my data connection dies completely upon launch of google maps or google navigation. It doesn't just fail, it kills internet access via the browser. ... Ummm. If you've been playing with different roms, have you tried wiping all the various places that data can be cached? Sounds to me like the thing might be crashing when it tries to reload whatever info from the previous (failed) session. As far as the phone {data transmission} HARDWARE is concerned, data is data -- there's no practical difference between the data from one program and another. And I don't think Tesco are going to try to spot and prevent Google Maps access. EDIT - if you have working APN data settings then that should be fine for Google Maps ... However, if your GPS hardware was trashed ... hmmm ... ... what else is there that you can load to prove whether or not your GPS hardware is functional and rational? How about http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-status-too...psim.gpsstatus2 ADDED and it probably wouldn't hurt to download a Compass App to check that too while you are at it. Had the same issue as you. You need to delete all the O2 APNs to fix it. Use apn backup and restore from market to delete them.

How about http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-status-too...psim.gpsstatus2 I've selected the two different wipes in clockworkmod when changing roms. With the Orange SIM it does work. Launching maps loads the relevant tiles for my location rather than no tiles at all with the tesco SIM inserted. With tesco sim at home I'm just getting a G connection. Orange is 3G. I wonder if this could be a factor even though regular internet browsing works fine in both cases. It's just the G disappears (with no replacement) with the tesco sim inserted when I launch google maps. Update:- The first time I launched GPS Status, waited for a lock then launched maps, it worked, planned a route and displayed it etc. I tried again to be sure and it said "data connection lost" and true enough it was fully broken just as before. Phone works ok but no data till I reboot or switch airplane mode on/off Edit: will try apn backup and restore. Compass works fine :) Edited October 18, 2010 by tcpaulh
Guest oh!dougal Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 If its working on Orange, then its some sort of settings issue. The hardware MUST be functioning. It sounds like you are getting a slow and fragile link to Tesco/O2. There have been a few threads about O2 settings! Good luck!
Guest ri4z Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 It's some strange conflict due to the O2 APNs being present. The O2 APNs cannot be deleted manually on the r3 rom, so that's why I suggested using apn backup and restore to get rid of them. It'll fix the issue. Trust me :)
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Guys. Thank you :) You've all been great. As it turns out (oh god I hope so anyway) it was a case of rogue 02 APNs. Special thanks to ri4z for that!! I had posted another thread and asked about a program to let me delete those apns but nobody reading had the answer. Anyway, I'm well chuffed. Early days yet but everything is working the way it should. Just to confirm, if this happens to anyone else then download "APN backup and restore" and delete those damn 02 APNs :- O2 UK O2 MMS Postpay O2 MMS Prepay O2 UK MMS APN Backup and Restore
Guest ri4z Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 One other thing I use port 9201 instead of 8080 for tesco. Both work for me though.
Guest dav_dako Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Glad you got it sorted. Out of interest, has MMS been working for you? I'm still not sure if it works correctly for me, keeps saying it cant connect to download the content of the message.
Guest tcpaulh Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 I'm assuming that mms is broken. Haven't tried yet as I was focusing on the nav/maps issue. I'll give it a go as soon as I see a fix that a few people say works consistently.
Guest dav_dako Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Cool, well I shall root around and see if i can come up with anything. Tried changing port to 9201 like ri4z had mentioned but still doesn't seem to be working
Guest flatnote31 Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 Odd enough.... my Tesco sim is not reliable using data most of the time (even in Central London), I'm getting E (Edge)..... and even when it shows 3G+ (HSDPA) internet S.U.X! tried pingtest and downloading data is utterly useless.... best I ever got was 1.2Mbps.... but most of the time it just fails test (0.0) or max (0.2Mbps) uploading seems ok though..ironically.....@ 0.3~0.4Mbps with 3, I used to get 2.5Mbps down and 0.4 up! ummmm....kinda thinking of migrating to T, now that they share 3g with Three and 2G with orange..... could it really be best of both worlds?
Guest merlin617 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 just spoke to Tesco Mobile Data Support and they tell me that the phone needs to be 'provisioned' for MMS but that they do not support this phone on Tesco Mobile as its not one of theirs.
Guest bobby-gg Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 I've got exactly the same problem here too, except. I'm on t-mobile, was in Newcastle city centre today, full signal and showing 3G+, connected to internet no problem, tried goggle maps and dropped the connection. when I lose mine I also can't make or receive calls or texts and have to restart the phone. getting really pissed off with it now:-(

I think it's just a fact that Tesco Mobile internet sucks. I have had Tesco for a few months and the internet sucked on my Nokia 5530 (2G only) and both 2G and 3.5G suck on my San Francisco. Tesco is supposed to use the O2 network but I don't think it truly does, at least not the mobile internet portion of it, because I used to be on O2 and the internet was fine. I'm getting very used to see the "connection reset by the server" error message now!
