Desire HD vs Desire Z vs Nexus One

Hi all,

I'm selling my Galaxy S (awful GPS and it's not as "exciting" anymore) and wondering about which phone to get next. I still have my Hero, which is still okay, but rather outdated (and laggy).

The three alternatives I see are the Desire HD, Desire Z and Nexus One.

The Nexus seems to be slightly outdated (of course), but has a ton of ROMs available (just look around here at the forums - for its age, it still sees a lot of activity, which can't be said for the Galaxy S).

Desire HD has a huge screen (which is nice for reading), more RAM and a faster CPU than the Desire Z.

On the other hand, the Desire Z has longer battery life and a physical keyboard (might have to hack a little script to change the layout to Dvorak, though).

What do you people reckon would be the best choice?

My main criteria are:

  • Customizable - the more ROMs, the better. Easy rooting (okay, since the Desire HD and Z aren't out yet, that's probably hard to tell), easy update, as little proprietary "protection" (read: paternalism) as possible
  • No lag. It's the most rage-inducing component ever. I run Fluxbox on a Quadcore for exactly that reason: Bloat leads to lag leads to RAGE.
  • Good GPS quality (Geocaching with the Galaxy S is absolutely impossible, I can't wait 60 seconds to get a fix that's 15 meters off in clear weather conditions)
  • Good connectivity: The Hero has great wifi reception; would be nice to have the same in the new phone
  • Good battery life: I have to recharge both Galaxy S and Hero at least once every 20 hours, it'd be cool to have a phone that lasts longer

I know that neither of the two new Desires are released yet, which is why I'll bump the thread when that's the case. Still, I guess it's possible to predict a few of the points (Customizable, for instance - how friendly is HTC?) for those two.

As for the Nexus One: Those of you who have one, does it meet my criteria?

Thanks in advance to all of you who reply!

I can only speak about my nexus one which has some issues which don't seem to affect other nexus one's.

[*]I don't experience any lag and if I did I'd switch to a different ROM.

[*]The GPS quality on the Nexus One is okay, a bit better than the few Galaxy's I've compared it too. It also finds location quite quick without a signal.

[*]Good connectivity is a problem with my nexus one, it won't resume a wifi connection after standby. I have to use Tasker to disable and re-enable wifi on screen unlock. I don't know if this is a problem outside my own personal phone though. 3G connectivity also isn't as good when compared to my Motorola Milestone. Even when the signal is high I get drop outs on the nexus one where the milestone is solid, again could by my phone.

[*] Battery life is a little bit better than the Galaxy S but nothing to write home about.
