GMail access & sync > 'Error Validating Phone Number'

Still new to Android and its concepts.

I'm trying to get access to my GMail account. I added my log-in detail and I got a message box telling me to wait some minutes, Nothing seemed to be visibly happening during that time. Next day, noticed that my Google Contacts had appeared on the phone, good. But I don't seem to be able to get any luck with GMail. Just a pause followed by a message "Error validating phone number"

I've configured SETTINGS/ACCOUNTS & SYNC and it is reporting that 'sync is on'

Then, after hitting the MAIL icon on the home screen I get the "Error validating phone number"

If I then go to the applications screen and choose 'Google Mail' which WILL detect mail so long as I choose REFRESH from its menu

I'm using GiffGaff's O2-based SIM.

Please could anybody explain what's happening here?

The Mail icon is probably for Orange mail and that only works when you have an Orange SIM in.

You should have a 'Google Mail' app on your phone. Get your Gmail form this one.

Yes, I get partial success from the Google Mail app route, as I mentioned. However, using that, it seems I must manually 'menu>refresh' to update. It doesn't wake up from email being pushed from the server as I had expected.

Menu > settings > accounts & sync

if you turn on background data & auto-sync, you can select which elements of which accounts (i.e. email/contacts/calendar) will get auto-updated. I don't know if this is the exact equivalent of a push service, but seems pretty comparable.
