Rubber coating peeling off on San Francisco

Just a note to say... be careful of your San Francisco, as I have just noticed that on mine, along the left hand edge where the chrome strip lies, a little patch of bare plastic is visible, where the rubber coating has worn or peeled away.

Take care! :P

on mine, in the small space between the usb port and the chrome strip, there is a little patch of bare plastic... I think i might have scratched the coating off with the usb cable... but i am just not sure...

Mine has a bit that's come off near the headphone jack - i'll need to be more careful when connecting things i think.

Some of mine has come off on the top near the power.

This is a severe design flaw - why use a substance that comes off so easily? It won't affect my enjoyment of the device, but it still is pretty poor.

Simply cost. It's part of the £60 between this and a Wildfire and the £300 to a Galaxy and Desire.

It doesn't seriously affect anything other than look and £90 smartphones are built down to a price.

as i posted in the white san fran thread, mine is peeling off too, hopefully i bought the pouch on ebay, but yeah, is definitely a major flaw from this mobile

you can say whatever you what about it, but construction for me, is something i really care on gadgets, so i am really down about this

Your argument doesn't hold water. It would cost LESS to NOT coat the plastic!

If it gets really bad you could always just rub it all off with one of those scratchy green pads or some fine grain sandpaper. I sanded the battery cover on my pulse down to a matte finish after the original glossy finish got scuffed.

That's a shame. :P

I'm going to suspend mine inside a block of clear resin, so it never gets damaged :P

My old T-Mobile Pulse got easily scratched and had some chipping in places. So far my SanFran is unblemished but I've kept it in a phone sock since I bought the phone and I'd never put any phone in my pockets without being in a case.

If you look after the phone then it shouldn't chip. But seeing some pics it's a shame that some people who have been taking care of the phone have still got cosmetic issues :P

If the case is so poor its going to disintegrate on its own, why are we worried about protecting it with leather cases and silicon covers? Just throw it in the pocket and don't even bother with screen protection....

this must actually be true in the white version..

I have never owned any phone that has ended up looking that bad, but I know some people that simply don't care and the phones they have usually end up battered and scratched to buggery very quickly. One girl I worked with even managed to put a pretty deep scratch right across the middle of her one week old iPhone 4 screen because she never used a case and would always keep it in her handbag along with her car keys :P

Some people.....

Because I want to keep my phone in a decent condition for as long as possible. I don't know about you or others but I don't really enjoy using a phone that looks like its been in an explosion.

Thanks for the information, but I knew it coz its the most cheapest material I have ever seen in any mobile compnay in 10 years, what you expect from Chineses design and manufactorer with just 89.99 £ (i got) trually said compare to the LG gt540 optimus which was supplied with 1.6 and no capacitive screen and less screen resolution still so fast and stable and compatible with most market software, I say SF is higher in all aspect still slow and lagging with screen and other software

seriously I'm keeping mine in one of my new socks untill I find a decent case for it. It's a Hundred pound note!!

Technicaly it's amazing, the screen, the power, the ram. The GPS is a wonder, it works five meters behind doubleglazed windows in the middle of my livingroom. Nobody I know had a GPS mobile in my flat that worked so far from the window!

I have to agree with flibblesan on this. Until I bought a sock and some screen protectors I kept mine in the plastic wrap it came with, and now I won't even put it on a table if the sock isn't underneath it. All things degrade, it's just a combination of how you treat it and how it's made that makes the difference to how long it takes.

I don't think I'll be getting a hard leather case now though, after checking out some of the pics here.

I think a sock is the answer. I'm careful with my gadgets but having used a leather case the back cover is showing signs of wear. I originally thought it was staining from a black jelly case I was using (there are purple hued patches) but white spirit didn't shift it.

Socks are awesome. Almost all the ones I've seen are a perfect fit for the San Francisco and some, like the one I have, are stretchy

a black magic marker should cove up the wear nicely :P

I really like the rubberised feel of the plastic but I'm wondering if that is the cause of the (apparent) accelerated wear?

Anyway, at least I won't feel so precious about keeping it in mint condition now.
