ADW in Stephen Hyde's FroYo V1 - unable to change wallpaper

I'm stuck with a wallpaper that I do not want and lost Stephen Hyde's blue stripes (which I since have located somewhere in an apk)

I sheepishly selected the "wallpaper gallery" and sure enough there was only that blue ADW splash on white available. After selecting that, my only way out was to install a different ADW "theme" but that, too will only allow me either

1. the ADW blue splash

2. a live wallpaper (I think they are all distracting)

3. the stock wallpaper of whatever theme (I purchased two to see whether the developer would help me but that is not the case).

No matter what I due when I try to select something from e.g. the gallery via the ADW wallpaper context menu it stubbornly goes right back to the screen that let me select.

I tried both *.jpg (seems to be the default) and *.png.

I think this must be a bug (something similar is described here in a cached thread: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/sear...clnk&gl=us).

Any ideas how to fix it? My device is rooted. I want Stephen's stripies back! Bohohohooo.

Appbrain with FastWebInstaller, install wallpaper direct from appbrain website.

Have you tried doing as suggested in that thread and using a task killer to kill ADWLauncher after selecting a new wallpaper? Could try just going to settings->applications and force closing it, then press 'home'.

I did that but without luck. The thing that maddened me the most is that I just can't figure it out. I got this far with Rom flushing and all under ubuntu maverick and now I can't change a pathetic background...

Well I just went to wallpaper>gallery and picked an image of my car and it set fine

uh.. reboot?

No dice. Kinda fascinating. We are all using the same Rom and the same steps but with different results.

Gallery presents me with my pics and when i select nothing happens. I've tried to swap the stripes for the ugly ADW image but can't find the bloody thing in any place or package. Drives me crazy.

So when you change the theme you are able to change the background as you like?

I have rebooted many times, used androot for superuser. Ill try webinstall now (have it but never used it for backgrounds).

Maybe the next ROM flush will fix it for me. The irony is of course that this device hacking is incredibly empowering but not being able to change a simple background almost humiliating after having abandoned all proprietary lockdown on all my devices...

Holy smokes. Appbrain is amazing! I have no problem loading backgrounds that way. Not sure how that is possible.

It requires one has "fast web install" installed and enabled. The wallpaper link is somewhat hidden in the menu: http://www.appbrain.com/wallpaper

Thank you much for that tip!

Kinda gives you a new appreciation for the QA process offiial roms have to go through, doesn't it?

I think your last sentence is the key; I think most of us haven't tried changing the ADW theme. Is there a particular theme you used? I only see one available, but I haven't felt the need to look for more. I did turn off the 'use theme icons' box. Can you try switching back to ADW Default Theme and see if the issue goes away?

My own wallpaper issues I solved by writing a custom Live Wallpaper app that replicates the most of the Streak 1.6 behavior.

If I remember correctly, I tried a few live wallpapers and then selected the "blue stock" theme only to go back to "default". Because I could only click on images from my gallery without being able to really select them (get thrown back into the same directory) I chose the blue/white splash image of AWD. Unfortunately, there was no way of selecting or adding any photos to that AWD default gallery directory and I'm stuck here. Must be an evil game console sequence I entered... no return possible.

Odd that the Web Installer has super user abilities that I don't have myself after rooting.

Just trying to get reproduction right; You switched to a different ADW theme, started having this issue with wallpaper choices, then went back to default, and are having the problem still?

When you long press the screen, and choose Wallpaper, it takes you straight to the Wallpaper gallery? No 'Select wallpaper from' menu with 'Gallery', 'Live wallpapers', and then 'Wallpaper Gallery'? Or do you get that menu, but choosing 'Gallery' doesn't seem to work properly?

When you choose an image in the Gallery, do you get the screen with the adjustable box for cropping/scaling the image? Could be that is part of the issue, perhaps a bug related to theme switching in ADW.

Yes, I went to a different theme, had the problem, went back to default and it is still the same.

The long press does give me a choice and it initially let me flip through the gallery. That has now changed to astro only and when I select I'm thrown right back into the folder to select something.

I never saw a scaling or crop option in those looooong bye gone days where ADW kindly allowed me to use the gallery.

Great. I can't upload my screenshots. Get a no file.selcted error. File.is showing as sdcard/screenshots/screenshots.jpg/ the slash is as shown. So maybe that has something to do with my problem. Seems to think its a folder and not a file even with the wallpaper selection.

Ok I think I figured out your problem.

Go into settings>applications>manage applications and find astro in all apps and clear default actions.

I think that will fix your problem.

Huh?! You've nailed it! It didn't help that I have both astro and astro pro. I had checked for default settings of astro pro and they were clear. I didn't realize that that would do nothing to the core astro. I wonder whether my other past headaches were caused by similarly conflicting basic and premium version issues with other programs.

I now have a normal gallery with crop function for the wallpaper. I reverted right back to the blue stripes ...

Thanks much!
