Not sure if anyones posted this, but looks like we'll have to use the dev made 2.2 as I wrote to Orange and they said..

Dear Seb

Thank you for your email regarding your Orange San Francisco phone.

Unfortunately, there are no plans to release the Android 2.2 for this model.

I am sorry we are unable to assist you further.

Kind regards

Joe

Not surprising seeing as pretty much every one they sold has been unlocked from their rubbish network and put to good use elsewhere

I cant say I'm too surprised, Orange do have a record of putting out phones and then dumping support for them... and the Market it is aimed at is not that Tech Savy...

I know they are working on a new version of the 2.1 ROM, as there are problems with the current ROM that they are keen on resolving. I assume we will see that 'somehow', I did (just) realise that there is no sign of OTA updating in the settings menu...

I guess their target audience is satisfied with avoiding the settings menu at all costs and installing the halloween soundboard and fish tank live wallpaper from the market, no flashing of roms or fiddling with things. Still, the so called alpha version of the 2.2 we got now keeps impressing me.

I reckon they couldn't be bothered to find out from the relevent dept and just said no. Same thing happened with Pulse on T-Mobile. CS kept denying any release and then we finally got one (which was later retracted :P)

ZTE have phones with 2.2 coming very soon in China so as soon as we can get a dump of the retail system and kernel we'll have a properly working official Froyo for the phones. And don't forget the work that is currently being done elsewhere to build Froyo for our phones.

It's nothing to worry about. We will have 2.2 and there is the possibility to have 2.3 when it's released.

I thought the next version was 3.0?

They are keeping 3.0 for Honeycomb. 2.3 is now Gingerbread and it's likely that it won't require the stupidly high specs.

Well... A certain anonymous Android engineer from Google hinted that the next release (aka Gingerbread) would be numbered 2.3 - but considered 'a major release' nevertheless. (I've read it on Engadget, but it's sourced from elsewhere, TechCrunch AFAIR)

I guess the Honeycomb is slated to be the 3.0 then, being optimized for tablet use etc.

I'm not bothered at all that Orange doesn't want to update the SF. God only knows what customization would they put on this time...

EDIT:Darn, took me too long to write ;p

Ahem... do keep in mind 'Eclair' covers both 2.0 AND 2.1....

Honestly...don't believe a word these customer service reps say!

Yeah, and they put that gingerbread man in the yard of Googleplex just for kicks? But well, I'm not the one with 'Mountain View, CA" in 'From:' field, so...yeah :P

But of course you're right about the Eclair - I guess codenames apply to major releases simply, regardless the numeration leap?

The last time I talked to a Android guy he refused to show me the roadmap.. There is a Gingerbread man out on the lawn, but that just means the code is 'finished'... a few people I've talked to seem to think that Gingerbread is going to be a Table only Fork (3.0) and a very similar looking (visually) fork for handsets (2.3).

Apple did fork iOS for the iPad in just that way and have had (apparently) a bitch of a time trying to re-integrate them.....

Silly Valley is awesome for Rumours tho, my favourite recent one was that Apple was going to buy Facebook to get around their lack of content on Bing! apparently Steve was going to announce it at last weeks Back to Mac event. I must of missed that one

There is a new flagship Android device coming soon, I suspect we will find out for sure what's going on then.

Yup, the flagship device being supposedly made by Samsung Mobile - they already announced an unveiling event for an Android device.

About the forking - differences lying in sheer code (kernel layer mainly I guess) is quite natural... But I, for one, thought that the UI would be main differentiator between tablet and handset Android. Oh well, we'll see.
