Guest flash2004 Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 (edited) I was wondering if wi-fi tether is possible to be included in MCR or some other builds ? I know people are going to recommend barnacle but with the wifi sleep issues it is becoming very unusable. also wi-fi tether has USB tethering which is really a good option (I know about pdanet but that is not really convenient) Also wi-fi tether has infrastructure mode (works like your router wifi signal, instead of adhoc mode) which is also really useful Any other suggestions to get a usable internet connection from my macbook through the blade 3G connection are also welcome :P Reliable solution found : posting here for the benefit of everybody (thanks to vl4d & oh!dougal) - Plug the phone through USB to your laptop, increase the screen timeout to 30 minutes and set the preferences for wi-fi sleep policy to never. This should ensure a hassle-free browsing experience through barnacle wifi-tether. (Infrastructure mode will still not be available, but people who want that should try froyo :D) Edited October 27, 2010 by flash2004

Guest oh!dougal Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 ... I know people are going to recommend barnacle but with the wifi sleep issues it is becoming very unusable. ... Isn't it fine while the phone is powered through usb (or charger) -- and wifi sleep (in advanced settings) is set to never (instead of the default 'when screen sleeps')? Do both those things and it should be fine.

Not that i need it, but had a look after reading your post and don't have the Tehering and portable hotspot options, presume you're talking about Froyo. Does 2.1 have a USB tethering option at all?

Guest flash2004 Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Thanks for all help. vl4d also gave me the solution on IRC yesterday. I changed the screen timeout to 30 minutes and plugged the phone to USB. That seemed to solve the wifi sleep issues

Guest flash2004 Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 I have used barnacle without disconnects for 7 hours straight today using the above method. So it definitely works :)
Guest Nyberg Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Any application that only enables usb tethering? Not really interested in turn my phone into a wifi router.
Guest malooga Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Any application that only enables usb tethering? Not really interested in turn my phone into a wifi router. Easytether works fine for me, you have to install the counterpart pc program too.
Guest oh!dougal Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 (edited) ... you have to install the counterpart pc program too. And THAT is the reason that connecting to the phone by wifi makes sense. Its a network. If your kit can use wifi, then it should be able to use the phone's data connection. You don't do anything different on the kit itself. So, no matter whether its Mac, pc, games console, Arduino, ... its (almost*) like connecting to a wifi router. Simples! * Its an 'ad hoc network', rather than an 'infrastructure' one. Still more likely to work easily than persuading your stuff to use a usb connection for networking. I managed to get this working properly setting screen to stay on while connected to the computer via usb. When you say unsecured, does that mean you wouldnt recommend using this with emails, online banking etc, even using https? Who can intercept the data if this is unsecured and what would you recommend to improve the security?
