Smb / Cifs or NFS mounting

I can find very little info on mounting a smb or nfs share on my Streak.

What I'd really like is to be able to mount a network share using cifs or nfs (I don't mind which)

I know that currently this is not possible because the kernel needs some module which the Streak is missing.

I also know that it is possible to use Astro or some other file explorer app to browse remote shares, but this is just not as clean and versatile as using a mount.

Do the Kitchen ROMs include the module? (cifs.ko / tun.ko ??)

Would it be possible to simply include these? or do they have to be device specific?

I wouldn't have considered myself a complete beginner, but I'm definitely not far in the door when it comes to kernel/module compiling, ROM generation etc.

Someone, either Steve or fards, recently posted a working tun.ko module for the Froyo build.

For SMB, there's a plugin for ASTRO File Manager that lets you connect and browse to SMB shares; it has builtin support for SFTP as well.

Sorry to dig up such an old topic but I'm trying to find information about CIFS support for the streak. This was the only topic that I could find here, so figured it was as good as anywhere to ask the question again

Hi PeteBest, I looked into this last year and never got anywhere.

After a bit of searching, I also realised that if I were able to mount a NFS drive onto a sdcard folder, then all the apps that search the sdcard (Gallery, music/video apps etc) would scan my entire NAS drive of > 1Tb and probably couldn't handle it. So I never took it any further such as compiling my own cifs.ko etc.

You are better off with a video streaming app and an "ES File Explorer" or "Astro File Manager" app etc for copying and others for syncing.

I can use an app "Mount Manager" to mount a SMB folder to a sdcard folder. But I still have two problems:

1. I only can mount to a sdcard folder, I don't know how to create a folder in /mnt. Every time I create a folder in /mnt, it will go away after reboot. I don't know to make it permanent.

2. I am using 1.6.1. This build seems has a built-in cifs.ko. But it does not have a nls-utf8.ko. So it does not support UTF-8 encoding. I don't know where I can find one that is compatible with Streak. I have searched for a while, still no good news.

pattym, I have CIFS support in my ZTE blade and it's great, just mount the drive when you need it and unmount it later. It really does work great for streaming movies, I've not had any problems with gallery etc hammering my 3tb nas drive. ES and Astro copy the files over to your SD before you can watch the movies, so it's nowhere near as good as the CIFS support
