Setting handset for calls and texts?

Sorry basic question I can't find the answer to anywhere:

How do I change the settings so I can use the the SF just to make calls and send texts, please?

Can I sync google calendar/contacts over USB whilst the phone is in this state?

How do I then switch internet access on and off?

The reason I ask is that I pay for interweb by the day and I'm very, very wary of Virgin charging me when I've only used it for calls and texts.

Thanks!

Dunno about syncing over usb, but it's easy enough to switch off your data connection, just untick the option, it's what I do on a night to save being woken up by nocturnal emails :P

Is that the one under:

Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Data connection?

It's that simple?

To make it double-safe you may use an APNdroid app to completely turn off access to APNs temporarily. AFAIK some apps can override the Data Connection setting.
