Guest livingdead Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Heyo everyone! I'm not that new to this site, and I'm definitely not new to Android phones. I had an Xperia X10 before and now playing around with the SF. I loaded two movies into my SF just to check out the video quality, one was .avi and the other .wmv. After the stock player did not work, I dl Rockplayer. The avi file played brilliantly (it is a BDRIP as well!!) with only a slight lag at times. The wmv file didn't play. Decided then to use AVCPro to convert the wmv file to avi; tried again but can't work! Rockplayer just hangs, and the stock player says file cannot be played. Tried with different other formats as well (mkv, mp4, mpeg etc) but couldn't get it to work not only for that movie, but for 2 others that I tried. Any help guys? :P I've no idea why only one avi movie can be watched. p.s: read somewhere in the forum (sorry couldn't find the link) that using stock player is best after converting files to mp4, but still didn't work..sobs.
Guest toytown Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Some help would be nice :P I'm not sure of the exact profile of h264 it suppports and i havent had time to test all the options, but for now im using Handbrake http://handbrake.fr/. 1. Run the application 2. Drag your AVI/WMV/etc file into the window. 3. Choose Apple/Universal as the profile on the right hand side. 4. On the "Picture" tab select the width/height (make sure Keep Aspect Ratio is ticked") if you dont get the option, turn anamorphic off......I normally choose 600-700 for the width and the height is determined via the aspect ratio. 5. Click the "Video" tab and click the "Avg Bitrate" option and select the bitrate you want. 500-1000 seems fine, the higher the number the better the quality, but the bigger the filesize. Make sure "2 Pass Encoding" is switched on to get the best quality. 6. Click the "Audio" tab, click the first track and change the bitrate to 64-96kbps, you could go higher but its not needed unless your outputting the audio over higher quality speakers 7. In the Destination section change the target file to have a mp4 extension rather than a m4v 8. Click start and wait for your encode to finish. 9. Upload to your phone. As mentioned these might not give the best possible results for the phone, but i dont know what profile it supports right now so i tend to use this rather than megui.

Guest Sere83 Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) Use AVC pro with the following settings Customised MP4 Move (.mp4) Video Codec : X.264 Frame Size: Original (up to 800x480, if encoding from HD change to 800x480 or any VGA resolution in the right aspect) Video Bitrate: 900-1000kbps (which ever you prefer or can go lower to save space) Video Framerate: Check the original file and do the same Audio Codec: AAC Audio Bitrate: 128Kbps (can go lower or higher if you want) Audio Channel: 2 Disable Audio: No A/V Sync: Basic This works great for me. The stock Video player is the best player to use. Rock player is rubbish IMO on these ARM 11 based handsets, I can't play anything well on my SF using it. Only good on more powerful Cortex A8 powered handsets. Edited October 27, 2010 by Sere83
Guest UncleFista Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 did all the above steps...still says video cannot be played on stock. and on rockplayer, it hangs. I found an encoder program that's worked flawlessly for me. For the life of me I can't remember where I found it but I've stuck it in my public dropbox folder for you here Encoder.zip Hth

Rockplayer wasn't rubbish it played that ONE particular avi movie that I had....no idea why it's so infuriating. Thought it is a problem with my movie file, but it runs on my laptop and I've tried a few all giving me the same results. I'm stumped.
Guest asim18 Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 I use Xilisoft Ultimate to convert videos for my San Francisco. Works perfectly 100% of the time. If your file doesn't work, even after re-encoding it, then the encoder is probably crap.

Guest toytown Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Is there any chance you can post the video after converting, or perhaps just do a sample, so i can see whats going wrong. The method i used with handbrake has worked for all my videos ranging from a sample clip, to the whole Avatar film. Im using the stock rom if that helps.
Guest cobalt01 Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 (edited) I take it your on a stock rom then? if so han't you tried restarting back to factory settings? i know you'll loose your data unless backed up but this should clear everyting and hopefully work without any problems. Isnt winamp/realplayer on the market these should hopefully work. You could always use something like gspot codec to see about what the avi settings are that worked and encode rest with same settings might work for you. Edited October 29, 2010 by cobalt01
Guest Mark D Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Give RealPlayer beta a try. I had problems with lag and out of sync audio using the stock player but Real Player has played everything fine so far. Haven't tried all the video formats obviously but had no issues with AVI's, .movs and 3gp.

Guest cobalt01 Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Ok, like Mark D said try realplayer otherwise could always make a backup an clear cache etc an restore backup this may help. Could be something to do with settings within the phone somewhere
Guest blauwal26 Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Running a linux box here, does anyone have some usable ffmpeg settings at hand?
Guest papatsonis Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 I have the same exact problem.. i can see videos on youtube.. but i cant play .avi(xvid), mkv/mp4(H.264 baseline) files.. ive tried meridian player, rock player, with no sucess. 1) mp4 (h2.64 [email protected] , both option(hardware accelerated/software accel) not work (seems like start and closes the file instantly) 2) avi (xvid, advanced [email protected]) Hardware accel -> the file canot be played with system player, Software accel -> (cannot open.. etc) 3) mkv (h2.64, [email protected]) hardware accel -> the file canot be played with system player, software accel -> (cannot open.. etc) any ideas?? at least the last one encode.. (baseline@L3.) should be able to decode... unfortanately i didnt try with other rom (jellyfish) to playback videos...
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) humm rockplayer play videos as it (no conversion) i use this apk RockPlayer_ARMv6vfp_1_5.5.5.zip rename .zip into .apk but if you want convert perhaps a good idea to use a program for ipods (i mean convert videos to ipod format) ? they exist in windows and linux P.S. : use rockplayer in software mode not hardware mode works fine Edited January 22, 2011 by Phoenix Silver
