Guest john306 Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Coming from a Nokia 5800, when I rang someone who was already chatting on their mobile phone then I would get a "call waiting" message and tone. The SF just rings like it normally does and gives no indication of whether or not the person is on a call. Presumably this is handset dependant, so is there anything that can determine the status of the call, I hate hanging on not knowing one way or the other. Thanks for any info

Yes, but surely its the settings and call-waiting-enabling of the number being called that matters. Agreed that it is absolutely nothing to do with the phone trying to make the call --- (or its settings).
Guest john306 Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Makes sense what you are saying but I'm using the same sim card now in my SF as in my Nokia, also the person who I'm phoning has exactly the same set up as when i used to call him with my Nokia. Only thing thats changed is my SF. I called him this morning and the phone just made the same ring ring till his voicemail kicked in, when he rang me back he said he was already on a call...

So in the network this works so when your friend receives your call and he alreadu has an ongoing call and if he has call waiting enabled: - the network first sends you a notification that call is in waiting state (this can be seen on your Nokia phone as short pop up and plays a small beep) - optionally (but this is very usual) the network plays a special ringing tone (waiting tone) to you instead of the normal ringing tone - after a specific time (15-30 sec) if your friend does not answer, your call is forwarded to his voicemail SO the only thing what is handset dependedt is how to render the Call Waiting notification (pop up+beep on nokia) to the phone. I have not tried but I will try it out as sson as I have 3 phones near to me. If he does not have call waiting enabled then your call immeditly forwarded to voicemail, no ringing. Thats about it really, My previous 5800 could do it, as well as SE K800i, mates iphone 3gs can't..... And these are all on Orange network with same sim/contract, thats why I find it hard to say it's solely down to network.
