How can I add Digital Input/Outputs

Hello.

I was wondering if it is possible to use a smartphone to control industrial devices?

I'm pretty sure there must be a way of programming some logic into the phone in C++ or something but am unsure how communication to other hardware could be achieved.

Is there a way of getting hard wired digital inputs and outputs into a phone? A USB breakout board etc that the phone can control? Bluetooth IO?

If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.
