Orange San Francisco not connecting to Google servers

I recently purchased an Orange San Francisco PAYG without a data plan... just calls and GPRS.

I planned to see the phone working on Wifi for Internet, Mail, Android Market. However with the Wifi connection, only the browser based internet works, while the other applications like mail, google mail, android store fail to launch. The message given is pointing to no data service. Orange technical help desk says it's a problem with google servers, while after waiting for a full two days, I believe it is definitely something to do with it requiring a mobile data connection for connecting to the google servers.

Does someone know what's the issue?

I don't have an orange data enabled sim. My other O2 one won't work as the device is network locked.

you would have got more response in the ZTE blade section, also know as the orange san fransisco.

have you set up a google account? i.e. have you logged on using wifi?

i initially set mine up with no sim card so no you do not need a data plan.

It is not allowing me to setup a google account. Simply fails with data connection error. While internet works fine on the browser
