roms in .tar.gz format

Since my phone suffered water damage i am unable to run clockwork mod. Installs ok but reboots when trying to access it. Would it be possibele (though boring) to have a froyo release in the old .tar.gz as this is the only way i can now update. All sensors are down and i cant get in to recovery mode though phone, text, net, multitouch and gps are all working. Any suggestions would be welcome apart from""yes mate your phone is shafted get another one"Many thanks people
