Hello,

I've spend a lot of time in this forum before buy a ZTE blade, and finally it will arrive thursday (a friend takes a trip to England and he takes the phone for me). I want to thank those who wrote the important issues on this phone.

I've a question, because I'm a new member and especially I've never got Android phone :

I need to unlock the phone to use it in Belgium (an other operator than orange of course) if I root it after ? Or when I root it, it also unlocked the phone ?

Thank you for your answer and sorry for my bad english,

SYS,

Gaetan

Hi, once you've unlocked the phone, it will never revert to its original settings/network so it doesn't matter what order you root/unlock/custom rom it..so enjoy it as soon as you get it :-) Cheers. Paul

Thanks for your answer ptdborth.

But I want to know when I root the phone, if I've got to unlock it anyway ?

"Rooting" is getting past the software locks that exist for the purpose of preventing you from making a mess of the software that makes the phone work. (The phone's self-defence!) In Android (Linux, Unix), users and programs have 'permissions', limiting what they can see and do with the stuff stored in the phone. The 'root' user (superuser, su) is allowed to see and do everything.

"Obtaining root access" (getting root permissions, 'rooting') is an essential preliminary to major software modification. As such its optional, but desirable!

"Unlocking" is about which operator's networks the phone permits itself to work with.

To use the phone in Belgium, you are going to need to unlock it.

Rooting does not unlock.

Unlock does not root.

Two different things.

"Activating" is the term Orange use for permitting the phone to be used on their (UK) network.

When they send the phones out with a delivery service they are not activated. Even though they are locked to only Orange, they are sent out banned from the Orange network. This issue would only affect people actually using the phone on the OrangeUK network.

It seems that the prototype Chinese 2.2 rom somehow bypasses the standard network lock -- but there are enough disadvantages that for now, you should not rely on that route to unlocking ... Just unlock it with the usual (serial number-based) method.

Thank you a lot for your complete answer oh!dougal

I'm thinking that the "lock" was a part of the software. You were a great help to explain that I am in the wrong way, and showing me the truth ^^

I will follow Paul's SIM unlock topic when the phone will arrive, http://www.nckcodes.co.uk seems to work and accepts Paypal
