Guest spences10 Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 This is pretty unique and for £0.99 worth a try http://www.the8pen.com/index.html Will be trying to acquaint myself with it later on this afternoon :)
Guest fards Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 (edited) Dasher is along similar lines, and maybe even more mental :) http://www.appbrain.com/app/dasher/dasher.android with some more info http://www.inference.phy.cam.ac.uk/dasher/ Edited November 2, 2010 by fards
Guest matty.cptk Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 its fun. but a hella lot slower than a normal keyboard, very frustrating too, been playing with it for about an hour now.

Guest rebski Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 I trained myself to correctly touch type using a full size keyboard and with my eyes on the screen. The weird thing is that I can never consciously remember the QWERTY layout and so typing on a small keyboard is a nightmare as I can’t find the letters I need. I liked Swype but even there is was frustrating because of the QWERTY layout and the keys are obscured by my hand so I try and peer around under my fingers to see where to go to next. So it is time for some revolutionary approaches for me. I have just paid for and downloaded 8Pen and shall have a practice later.
Guest matty.cptk Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 +1 Agree its even more mentaler lol been playing with 8pen and think its a really good idea, its like trying to learn to write again tho its similar to trying to write again, it didnt tickle my fancy as i couldnt see which letters i was aiming for , seems very fiddly but its a good concept nevertheless, there needs to be an enlarge option for the dell streak to compensate for the awesome screen. for handwriting apps i opted for "Diopen", Really good app for Handwriting use.
Guest netonyx Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 This thing does look cool, it just needs work. For one thing, it *must* have the option to turn off the auto space so a new user can do one letter at a time! Otherwise, your finger (or god forbid thumb) is blocking your view of many of the letters, and you have to twist and turn to see where your next letter is. In my brief trial, I didn't even try any long words; that would have been a nightmare. I think it has a ton of potential, though. Just not ready to commit to that learning curve yet.
Guest synaptic.flaws Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 ok.. that is insane! I do see that it might have a valid purpose other than to drive you to smash your fist into your gorilla glass, but ... very very frustrating

I used this on my Linux PC once to write an essay when I couldn't use one of my typing hands. A LOT faster than one would initially give it credit for. I bet it's especially nifty on the Streak's big screen in portrait.
Guest fards Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Lol , just replying using 8 pen and dasher It takes a while!

Guest Acky1337 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 damn that app is weird :) well although if you really get used to it, you CAN ACTUALLY learn ir sooo :)
Guest epuarlana Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 is it scaling fine on dell streak?
Guest rebski Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Given the size of the Streak’s screen the Black Spot could be usefully moved to one side or the other of the axis. That would permit the letters to be seen, both selected and yet to be. Provided I can memorise the arbitrary layout of the letters then I rather like using this. I guess perseverance is the key to that. is it scaling fine on dell streak? It looks ok to me when compared to the 8pen video
Guest Alkiera Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The Dasher thing is pretty awesome solution for one-handed typing on the streak. I can hold the device in portrait in right hand, and use right thumb to drive through letters and punctuation. It doesn't play nice in landscape, though; it's rather vertical space intensive, and there's no way to easily close it without hitting back, which frequently does odd things in the app you're in. In portrait, though, it is pretty awesome. It helped for me to change the letter-set to have more of the punctuation(Alphabet Name set to 'English with numerals and lots of punctuation'), and to read the pocket-pc note about the special colored boxes for caps, punctuation, and spaces(Yellow, Green, and cyan, respectively).
