Guest EMMJAY Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Would it be better to charge the phone on my MacBook Air, or on a wall charger. Im thinking there may be differences as my mac will be DC and wall would be AC. would one take longer than the other? would one last longer than other? sorry if this is silly question. what are you experiencing? -- BINCE
Guest mELIANTE Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The wall adapter is an AC-DC converter so that's not the reason it charges faster. The reason is USB ports in computers only give 500mAh max. of current and the wall adapter puts out 700mAh. That difference makes the charging times much better with the wall adapter.

My Hero takes 3 x as long to charge through USB and runs out 2 x as fast.
Guest has2bok Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 PC USB ports can only supply 500mA (not mAh). So if the wall charger supplies 700mA as another poster stated then charging via the wall charger is quicker. But there is no difference in how quickly the battery will discharge no matter which method was used for charging. Hope that helps.
Guest Rower85 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Correction, the charger output is 750mA. In the swedish forum the user Skerved made a test with multimeters and a power supply. http://www.swedroid.se/forum/showthread.php?t=23870 Maby you cant read the text, though the more important things are in the numb3rs :)

Yes, the charger will be faster than usb because it provides more current. Faster charging is quicker and thus more convenient. But its not the best way to maximise the battery's durability - how many charge/discharge cycles it can manage before its capacity (runtime on a 'full' charge) reduces unacceptably. With everything else being equal, gentler charging should make your battery last for more months before needing to be replaced. But hopefully, the phone's battery and charging system have been engineered so that even at the fastest that the charger can go, the battery should still last more than the warranty period! There is another aspect to this -- the actual charging rate available to the battery will depend on what your phone is doing while charging. If its off, all the available power could go to the battery. But if its on, with wifi and gps and bluetooth turned on, and you are running a graphic-intensive game, there will be rather less surplus power available to charge the battery. Lets say your use is taking 300ma. Then from usb, there's a maximum of 200ma to go to the battery. But from the charger, there's 750-300, 450ma available to charge the battery. So it can charge more than twice as quickly under those conditions from the charger than it could from usb. Or to put it the other way round, if you really were using that much power (300ma) running stuff while charging, it could take over 6 hours (1250/200) to fully charge the battery from usb ... The more current you are actually using on the phone while charging, the longer the charge time -AND- the more dramatic the difference in charge time between charger and usb. There are more complications, like the temperature of the battery, but the simple advice is, 'turn features off if you aren't using them' - your battery will run more hours between charges, charge faster and last longer before it needs to be replaced.
Guest belgotux Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Hello, I have done my own tests, the phone is charged at : - 370mA on connection with computer (it's mean that the 2 data pins are "in the air" or connected to the computer) - 670mA on wall charger (because the 2 data pins are connected each other) The wall charger is 1,8x faster... Power on or power off... And as said oh!dougal, if you use it at the same time, the USB's charge time is endless SYS, Gaetan
