Guest Xoplit Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Hello, Let me just start by saying that I do not mean to start flame wars which is better. I know that the the ROMs are going in very different directions and they suit different needs. However these two directions are crossing at the battery life parameter. I'm wondering if the tweaks of the Modaco Custom Rom come with the cost of more power consumption? Or are some of these tweaks directed specifically towards improving the battery performance? Is the De-Orangenated (having the factory settings, which should be configured for optimal performance by the manufacturer) more battery efficient? I have the phone for a week now and tried both ROMs, but this time is insufficient for determining the answer. I hope that someone with deeper knowledge of how those ROMs work and experience can help. Thank you

I have the phone for a week now and tried both ROMs, but this time is insufficient for determining the answer. I hope that someone with deeper knowledge of how those ROMs work and experience can help. Thank you The battery is the weakest point for Orange SF despite of having cheap price and loads more feature after extensive using this phone for one month I can say that this phone has most rubbies battery life amoungs all phone I used in last three years (6 phones) battery is weakest point of this phone and there is no way you can improve the battery I tryied all the methood from changes different rom, calibrate the battery, turn off 3g, wifi, live wallpaper, killing task in backgroud, setting screen to 0% britness and using least and even battery replaced by orage one time but still my phone is draining battery without doing anything , for the latest example I wipe off everything and do the factory reset last night and i am on on sab. ver 5 rom without installing any software , i put battery on charge last night and today at 9:48 AM without doing anything my battery percent showing is 88% (so without doing anything all things turn off), I am thinking of selling this device at the earliest , I buy it for 79£ but i can say that its not worth even single penny, because when u really need it u cant able to use it because bad bettery life, I think paud did not test this phone properly on the battery performance and its review leading to sell thousands of SF otherwise no one interested to buy it its better if not buy that phone i can save £79 pounds and that money I can add to buy better phone for that I never ever have to regret, what more can i say what is your experience about it, pauls most of review is based of the physical aspect of the phone most things he missed to check is graphics mark or performance, talk time, standby time, battery life in ideal condition, reliability of case or surface for wear and tear, need to test CPU, memory and graphics usage and performance with installing lots of stuff and software, pauls review is nowhere near from the GSMARENA or those reviewed on mobile-review.com website, the review is almost all about physical apparance (paul if u can read this please dont feel bad, you can this things as suggestion, if I would be in place of u I would try to do bit batter, my net is dead at home and I am surfing from library only got 3 min. left write u more later Urvish if any one have idea how to improve battery life please let us know asap , for all uses information that I did following task to improve battery life (1) Britness set to 0% (2) turn off, wifi, 3g, bt, live wallpaper, animation, vibration etc. (3) do complete charge and discharge cycle with completely phone off almost 20-25 time (4) try original rom, pauls rom and sab's rom ver 5 but result are same with all the phone (5) try phone for 4 days without installing any software (6) using two different task killer so I can kill each of the task killer after it kill all the pricess (7) normal day use is 20 min. talk, 30 min. wifi, and 1 hour navigate menus and normal software operation no games played at all Urvish Edited November 3, 2010 by onlinejobwork
Guest Dru383 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 There may be something wrong with your handset/battery because with everything off my battery only drops around 2% every 8 hours or so (ish). As for which from is best for the battery I'm not sure there's a great difference between either. In my case I've had marginally better battery life with sebs rom than the modaco rom but I've a feeling that's more because I had completed a few more battery cycles before I switched over to the sebs rom than the actual rom itself.
Guest booster22 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 when not using my phone my battery drops very slowly, to the point i thought the % widget had froze. maybe 1 % drop every few hours, it lasted 5 days without use. ive not rommed or anything, just deleated orange stuff and make sure nothings running in the background you dont need. so really just the 2g signal running. Roms will make a small difference, but ive yet to hear of anyone getting a extra day of use with one.
Guest The-One Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 I can get 35 to 40 hours out of my battery with a moderate usage (lots of text messages, some 10 minutes calls, a bit of wifi and with 3g data on all day syncing my gmail and feeds only). There are days were i can get full 48 hours out of it with a bit less usage on the wifi for example. There is really something wrong with your battery.
Guest ddotpatel Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 (3) do complete charge and discharge cycle with completely phone off almost 20-25 time DO NOT DISCHARGE THE BATTERY TO 0%!!!!! That is not good for battery life.
Guest Xoplit Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 I think you are missing the point here. This topic is about the impact of the different ROMS on the battery. I think there is another thread for how much the battery last depending on the usage, broken batteries and etc. Please keep this thread as clean as possible!
Guest The-One Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) DO NOT DISCHARGE THE BATTERY TO 0%!!!!! That is not good for battery life. Yes it is, if its done one time only every 25/30 charge-discharge cicle. It helps calibrating your battery and it has to be done. For a good charge-discharge cicle the battery should be charged when the phone gives out the first warning at 15%. Edited November 3, 2010 by The-One
Guest dr_AllCOM3 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Wifi and GPS drain the battery like no tomorrow, but everything else is fine.
Guest Maringer Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Wifi and GPS drain the battery like no tomorrow, but everything else is fine. Yeah, I rarely use Wifi or GPS so have them switched off most of the time. Leaving 3G on and with relatively light use, the battery seems to around 2 days without problems. The largest drain on my battery is my girlfriend who has become addicted to Angry Birds! Think I need to buy her an SF for Christmas so I can get my phone back! :)

No offense but I find this very hard to believe. My battery can last up to 2 days on standby, but if I actually use the phone lightly (say 30 minutes calls, 5/6 text, little bit of 3G) it will be rinsed within 12hrs max. You must have special powers or something. I really wish I understood why there is such a large discrepancy with some people saying they get as little as 8hrs and people like you saying you get 35 to 40, someone is talking crap. Or the custom roms are eating battery much faster than stock roms or certain models are faulty. This all makes absolutely no sense to me.

As you may recon there are more people that can get this out of their batteries and if you cant you obviously have a faulty one or you have something eating up your power.. mainly not every phone is the same. Using 10-20 minutes of wifi, making a couple of 10 minutes calls and 30 or so messages i can get almost two full days out of my battery, im not counting every hour and minute my battery lasts but i can count 30 or 35h between my charges. Since i charge it by usb with the phone off so it really charges up really to 100% and it is a slower amp charge maybe its also helping getting a good battery life. I usually charge the phone at 10% take it or leave it, oh and yes, i have 3G allways on (when im out of home witch is like from 8 to 19-20h depending on the day) because i need my e-mail allways synced. Like i said if i do not use the wifi i can get two full days out of it. The only thing i got installed is juice defender witch may help a bit savin up power.. i usually do not trust this kind of software but i had it in some other Android phones and i got some more hours from them so maybe it really does something. About the roms, i really do not know because i have the stock rom at the moment and the only other rom i had in my phone was one that i start working on after the kernel was released and since i do not use it every day i do not have a point of comparison. What i do know is that with Froyo and even with this 2.1 kernel we can tweak it alot to save more battery.. witch will come with time im sure. Edited November 4, 2010 by The-One
Guest schkinx Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 I'm on pauls R4 rom , the batteries on its second charge / discharge today . So far its been running for 8 hours now , battery level is 82% . Thats after using facebook for a few minutes , about a dozen text messages , showing off angry birds at work and 3 phone calls ( about 10 minutes altogether ) . brightness set to 50% , 3G and data switched on . quite happy with that :)
Guest Sebastian404 Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 Without sitting down with two(three) devices on the same network, doing the same things, at the same time, its going to be impossible to which is 'better'. In 'theory' Orange/ZTE have optimized the power/other settings for the handset, so the Stock ROM should be as close to best as possible, Paul's ROM has the hardware acceleration turned on by default, so again, in 'theory' it should be the worst for power use....

That is true, still, if you got the gpu helping it can release the stress on the cpu and save a bit more of power. And i dont know about ZTE but in my previous android phones the kernel that the manufacturer done was everything but power optimized.. and im talking about HTC in particular when with the stock kernel i would get a day or so of battery and with some power saving optimizations on some user customized kernels i get more than two days with the same usage.
