Had a play around with a galaxy tab today thinking maybe 7 inches might be cool, but tbh I wasn't that impressed really.

I could barely get my hand round it and felt really heavy in comparison to the streak, no way you can hold it in one hand for a long time.

Obviously the screen is bigger but the bezel is huge, and the UI seemed sluggish to me.its also well over priced.

Actually made me re confirm what a great form factor the streak is.

NO way u could use the tab as a phone without a head set like u can with the streak

Saw the Tab today, its bloody awsome! All these idiots in Currys were swarming round the 4 stong ShitePad display, so i struck up NOVA, they were all like 'Whoa whats that, is it a tiny Ipad?' I then proceeded to talk to them for about 15 minutes on why Android is better than IOS, and then folk be all like 'Im bloody buyin an Android device now youth!'

I'm waiting until some genius hardware company produces a bluetooth handset that can dial, make texts, and serve music over bluetooth when paired with a tablet. Imagine, keeping your phone in your pocket, but having a tiny phone-like thing to make calls on and check your messages with.

That's called carrying a tablet and a small phone!

-not planning on entering any contract because all of the available phones here are ass. So I import them unlocked.

-isnt it difficult to manage multiple phone numbers? If there is a service that consolidates them, I am sure its not available here.

-my current plan offers true unlimited data with no throttling, but having an attached voice plan is mandatory. There are options for data-only sims out there, but they are either locked to carrier-specific hardware, or they are get throttled when used to download files or stream things. The only option for a non-throttled unlimited plan on your choice of hardware comes bundled with a voice plan.

You live in Japan and the phones are ass????WTF! I though Japan had some amazing tech :)

I am with Tmobile here in the uk and they said when i took out the contract ive got a 3gb limit, but i regularly d/l about 5-8gigs, i keep ringing them up just to make sure someehings not wrong but they keep telling me im on an unlimited use tarrif with 3gb fair use allowance and when i go over the 3gb the only this that happens is that i wont be able to stream tv or download apps between the hours of 1600 and 0000, but ive never not been ablw to stream tv or d/l and app :)

o2 PAYG, min £10pm 300 txt, unlimited data = happy adzman :) (been on this tarrif far longer than i've had my streak, so very lucky that streak is locked to o2 or i'd have a big prob!)

RE the guy in Japan, i thought that cellular networks were completely different over there...? No GSM bands...????

They are mostly CDMA(US Verizon/Sprint style) but a few carriers use GSM, hence having the iPhone and other world-phones available. They aren't considered the best carrier for overall coverage, though.

Had the 'japanese phones are teh awesome' argument on another forum recently, too; basically, most Japanese phones are what we'd call 'dumbphones', but are much smarter, have many features that are only on smartphones here; full web browsing, broadcast TV viewing, etc. Also a huge preference for large-buttoned touchpads for Japanese text-entry, over capacitive touchscreens. What we'd call 'smartphones' are only 12% of the mobile market, a large chunk of which are iPhones and devices made by Sharp and SonyEricson.

I have two mortgages, two kids, and one wife. So I guess I have to stick to one sim for a long time. 5 inch is the best compromise in both world. Small enough to make phone call and big enough to surf the web.

I was really surprised how much I didn't rate the tab tbh, the weight particularly was bad its nearly twice the streak which feels feather light in comparison. Holding it one handed felt knackering after a couple of mins

The screen seemed slightly dull as well even on full brightness

Its all about the inches. hehe

Anyway .. am I the only one around with a contract and a lousy 500 MB traffic monthly allowance ?

Shame on O2.

feel your pain mate, the current contract deals on o2 are appalingly bad

i briefly looked at going back on contract (to get my streak) but unless you wanna lay out a large monthly cost the data allowance was terrible. (not really after paying £35pm for 2 years either, especially when most handsets are old hat after 6months)

I learned my lesson. Large downloads and stuff done over wi-fi. But the annoying thing is the HD youtube that takes a lot of traffic. Which brings me to ask a question, is there an app that scans and automatically connects to unprotected wi-fi networks ?

Yeah I am not so interested in glorified dumbhones. They're just now getting the galaxy s I900, which is a bit late for early adapters like me.

As for frequencies, they're actually pretty bad with 2g, largely because it has been completely phased out for local phones and as far as I know keep it around for international travellers. Thanks to Japan's high population density, two of the three big carriers have a near-ubiquitous UMTS coverage, though, so reception is never a problem for any 3g phone from outside the US. Bit it does suck how I can't switch to 2g to save on battery life.

I have tried every network and IMHO Three and tmobile are the best. I've been flittering between O2 Vodafone and Three since the late 90's then went to Orange a couple of years ago for the first time, they have Edge which was good (so do O2 I think), finally went to T-mobile last year and they are amazing! Signal wise they are the best for me and they have never pulled me for downloading too much. ONly bad thing with Three is they blocked to many 'private' websites, even asking them to lift the blocks it wstill wouldnt work :). Only bad thing about T-mobile is they compress all .jpg files so lpg's aren't as good quality, which is really pants :)

Any one read the trusted reviews review of the Tab?

They absolutely slate it (no pun intended)

I knew it didn't feel right when I tried one out but its nice to see my thoughts reflected in a review
