Guest Asselberghs Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Hi Guys:) I just purchased a 32 GB MicroSD card, the maximum capacity for HTC Desire. I´d like to do it right the first time so I thought I´d check with you guys. First I´m backing up my old SD card (the standard 4 gb) containing amoung other stuff an Titanium backup license, then I´m baking a new rom with A2SD+ to get as much space away from internal memory and onto SD memory. Then I boot into Ubuntu live disc and seen as I don´t have a MicroSD to regular SD adapter (I have SD card reader amoung others in my PC) I connect my phone to the PC and use Gparted in ubuntu to format the card, as the connected phone device, to fit the following first 16 GB FAT32 partition and then 16 GB Ext3 partition. Then back to Windows I put the MCR zip onto the "media content" partition which I presume also is the only part of the SD card windows wil be able to see and just detect it as a 16 GB card rather than 32 gb. And afterwards I flash the zip as usual. I presume I control apps going to the SD card as froyo handle it normally, move to SD under application management? or is it something specifict seen as Froyo properly still have their A2SD or does A2SD+ overwrite this? Hope you can help guys, I´m a bit scared to badword stuff up. Kind Regards Asselberghs

Everything is just the way you wrote but note that some internal storage is still used by apps so I think that 16gb of EXT partition storage is way too much because you'll run out of internal storage way before then. I think that 4gb would be sufficient but someone else will have to confirm it because I'm not sure. All your apps should be installed into your phone because a2sd will make sure that they are in fact installed on EXT partition. So there is no need to force the apps to SD.

You can't control it like FROYO a2sd. FROYO uses the FAT32 partition and it knows where the apps are so thats why you are allowed to move apps between internal and external memeory but this original a2sd and a2sd+ uses your ext3 partition instead so it is completely transparent to the internal memory of your phone so it think it is a part of the internal memeory. I don't know a gr8 about how it works but I am pretty sure you're better off with 2GB max because even with a2sd+ or a2sd data and cache will be stored in internal memory. Even If you're planning to install an HD rom you are pretty much ok with 2GB partition :) so don't waste that much of memeory for an ext3 partition. back to the original question "Can you control it?" Nope. Paul has put some scripts to do it so next time when you install something it goes directly to your ext3 partition (just like that :) ) except the data and cache of course.

Is this the case even with Dalvik Cache mode due to the + in apps2SD? Well just as long as I get the posibility for more apps on my phone it´s fine. Now you mention it I seem to recall something about the ext3 partition behaving as internal storage when you view the storage of the phone under settings..
Guest Asselberghs Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 (edited) So theres no way to turn desire into a "competitor" to Galaxy S´ 8 GB internal memory? I seem to recall that was the phones internal amount of memory. Is there anyway to check what max size of the ext3 partition is? since there seem to be a bit of different opinions on maximum partition size? Edited November 5, 2010 by Asselberghs
Guest bpivk Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Is there anyway to check what max size of the ext3 partition is? since there seem to be a bit of different opinions on maximum partition size? There really isn't any definite answer on this one. It depends on the amount of apps you'll put on the phone and on the internal storage that's consumed by them but my bet would be somewhere around 2 to 3GB. Is this the case even with Dalvik Cache mode due to the + in apps2SD? Yes. Some storage will still be used. For instance: I have 100 apps and games installed on my phone including some apps that take a lot of internal storage and I have 30mb of internal storage left which is still a lot. My EXT partition is 512MB or something like that. I still have 150MB left on it. Your internal storage mileage will wary because it depends on the number of apps you add/exclude from the rom and if you're using Sense or not.
Guest Asselberghs Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 I went with 1GB ext3 partition and partitioned it in the end of the table using ubuntu linux, according to that it was fine and then I flashed r9 over that, i remembered app2SD+ ofc, first i flashed it, but because I was tired I forgot to wipe and delete cache, when my wallpapers and stuff turned up I rebooted, reflashed and this time cleared cache and wiped the phone. Now it´s completely clear and I have 138mb left, according to SD & Phone storage:S what went wrong? should I not be able to see beyond 1 GB of free space from here becauase of apps2SD+??
Guest bpivk Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 No. The phone doesn't know that you're using a symlink to EXT partition on your card. But you can use Quick System Info to check free space.

Looks like it´s gone allright I presume the format or something took a bit away from the 1GB ext3 partition. Or did I mess something up? Kind Regards Asselberghs
Guest bpivk Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 (edited) No. Everything works ok. Edit: Now just install your apps and keep an eye out on internal memory. I usually don't let it drop below 20mb. You can use Cache Cleaner or some similar app to clean the cache when you start running low. Edited November 6, 2010 by bpivk
