Guest extrememonkey Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 (edited) I have the Dell car charging kit but was wondeting if this would work? Would save me taking my mains charger to work..... www.mobilefun.co.uk/mains-to-car-charger-converter-p3134.htm Edited November 7, 2010 by extrememonkey
Guest boboskins Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 Can't see why this wont work (simply supplies the 12v that your car normally would). However you will probably find that it will only charge extremely slowly as it only identifies itself as being supported up to 500mA. There is a slight chance that the dell car charger will draw too much current and kill it - but I doubt it. It would probably be cheaper to buy a USB mains charger and do the soldering of the two pins though... B I have the Dell car charging kit but was wondeting if this would work? Guest Amdathlonuk Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 Why do you need to solder 2 pins? I currently use a USB mains charger to charge my Streak with it's USB cable. I have been for the last 4 months and never had a problem.
Guest boboskins Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 Most of the usb chargers fail to charge the streak as dell set it so that it only charges when in data mode. This is relatively easy to mimic by shorting two pins (some people recommend adding a resistor). There are quite a few other threads which go into the details - give the forum search a try - it should give you more of the details. If you have successfully charging with a generic usb charger I know there would be quite a few people would like to know which brand/model it is. B Why do you need to solder 2 pins? B LOL.............ignore my last comment, I've just realised......... I have a DELL USB charger!  I can't remember ordering it with my Streak but I must have
Guest CrArC Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) Okay, now this is interesting. That explains why my Streak sat for four hours on an iPhone charger and did nothing! But yes, I have found other generic USB chargers to work. A mankey old one for some kind of digital camera worked for me the other day. [edit] And I would have been able to actually contribute to the thread if I could have remembered what it was... Edited November 10, 2010 by CrArC
