Trouble removing Google Maps

Recently I baked a version of Paul's excellent MCR r9 with Brut.all's Maps modification built in.

I've since found that there is a new version of Brut's Maps, and I want to take advantage of having S-OFF and install it now, but I'm having some trouble.

Just pushing the new APK over the top of the old one leaves me without any Maps installed. Install won't work, presumably because the old one is still installed, even if I remove the actual file first. And uninstalling won't work either.

'adb install maps4.6.0.4686-brut.apk' gives the following:

2231 KB/s (5615060 bytes in 2.457s)

pkg: /data/local/tmp/maps4.6.0.4686-brut.apk

Failure [iNSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE]

'adb uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps' gives the following far less helpful message:

Failure

Any ideas? I'd rather not bake a new rom without Google Maps installed, since I then have to mess around with CID and MNS files to make the phone work properly on Telstra's network.

There is an application on the Android market called SystemApp Remover, it's pretty good and I believe only $1 and can uninstall things that normal app managers can't, I used it to remove and update the old version of Gmail and it worked rather well.

I have used the same app and can't remove google maps. I just get an error can't remove message.

Do you have S-OFF by any chance?

The only way I can remove those apps is through adb and removing them manually.

The latest version of Titanium Backup has a feature to remove apps by going through recovery, this removed maps for me.

Yeah I used AlphaRev to do that. If it won't uninstall, try going into a terminal and entering the command "mount -o remount,rw /system" to mount the system RW, then you should be able to uninstall system apps.

@sam-e:How do you do that? Do you use Chuck Noris mode or is there another way. Because I have searched and I can't find this feature.

Yes, I've remounted /system as RW. Sorry, I should have specified in the original post, though I did say I copied the APK over the top of the old one. That doesn't work, though. Even if I remove Maps.apk from /system/app/, I cannot use 'adb install' to install the new Brut maps, and just copying it in there does not appear to work.

I'll try titanium backup.

I really am not sure then, sorry. I don't use brut maps, I just use the stock version but I have never personally had an issue updating maps. Also, I know that the brut version is a little behind the current revision, I guess that is the only other thing I can imagine that could cause an issue.

Press and hold down on the app and in the menu that comes up at the bottom Force remove app (by recovery exploit)

It doesn't work. I get the exclamation mark and then I have to reboot my phone.

Edit: Adb worked though.
