I'm replacing my cracked screen

So - i managed to drop my streak and the outer glass shattered. I was able to use it - but it looked like s***.

As the replacement was 140£ off eBay i wanted to try to separate the glass from the LCD/digitizer. I wanted to replace the glass only as it would be alot cheaper.

It was all going well until I managed to crack the LCD in the progress.

So... now i have ordered a brand new LCD/digitizer/glass off eBay and will let you guys know how it works when it arrives.

Until then, enjoy the video where i make an heroic attempt to fix my streak.

iFixit Teardown

- There are some things missing from the teardown such as that the circuit board is glued in one end and the lcd is attached with 5 small clips.

- It was also a bit tricky to release the circuit board from the plastic clips that kept it tight to the frame

- The cover where the capacitive buttons are should be opened from bottom-up as this is less likely to destroy the ribbon beneath.

Interesting video! Isn't the LCD glued to the glass, though? Was that why your LCD cracked when you tried to separate them?

Yeah, they are glued together. I wanted to see if i could manage to separate them with a scalpel, so that i could make the fix a bit cheaper. It was fully functional with the cracked glass, but the streak deserves better.

The outer glass is much more resilient to pressure than the LCD, so when i used some force to separate the glass from the digitizer, the weakest link had to give after for the pressure. :D

I emailed a German guy that have used the same screen i have ordered. His reply was that as long as you are careful with the disassembly, it is not very hard. I had an iphone 2g which i had to change the screen as well (i tend to drop things ), and that was much harder to tear apart.

He posted his result in a German forum - here - use google translate if its of interest.

Will time-lapse the reassembly when i get the parts.

not sure if u know, but you should heat up the lcd and the glass first before separating them. a hair dryer will work if you dont have a heat gun.

and dang that digitizer is expensive.. i bought one for an iphone for like $30.. its like 7x more.

I tried some "post-mortem" heating and separating, but i think the glue is too strong. I think you will end up frying the LCD.

Its mad expensive, but i guess its just a matter of time before more and cheaper parts will appear on eBay.

So - I received the replacement screen in under one week. It was shipped with DHL from China to Hungary and arrived at my door. *thumbs up* I guess some of the shipping cost is included in the intense price of the screen.

It was wrapped well, and he included a torx iron for the disassembly. He also mailed me videos to assist the disassembly.

It was pretty easy to put together - my only tip is to make sure you mount everything - I had to pull it apart half way through to put in some forgotten pieces. B)

So here is the operation - timelaps of assembly - (ps. its about 30mb)

If anyone should be as unfortunate as me to crack their precious streak screen then i can really recommend the seller, ssf009, on eBay. The price of the replacement is ridiculous but still cheaper than a new streak.

Oh, happy ending... :) Now im off to play some of the new Angry Birds levels :)

Very good to know. I am going to have to repair a friend's Streak soon and it is good to know that it has been done and the parts worked =) Appreciate you being the guinea pig ;-)

I'm in the same boat but i'm not even gonna to try and fix it myself

I'll just balls it up some more

what kind of charges can i expect to have it repaired?

I have no idea. Its the cost of the screen itself (220$) - and then the work. Its done in 30 min.

The worst part is to get it apart - the good thing is that the screen for your sake is already gone - so you cant mess it up more.

I would look at the ifixit pictures and figure out if you are up to it. The guy i bought the LCD from also mailed me some videos that explained the procedure.

Just so people know, carphone warehouse replace broken screens for £59.99.

Also, I broke my LCD, with no insurance, and tO2 sent me a replacement for free.

Food for thought.

I'm guessing you didn't read the tear down. That's the control buttons ribbon cable.

OK folks, here's the thing.

I've been in the process of replacing the screen for my Streak after it had an unfortunate meeting with some granite paving stones. While I was dismantling it, I've only gone and managed to rip the control buttons ribbon cable!

Is there anything I can do to repair this? Can I get a replacement part from somewhere? Failing all of this, do I just have to admit that it's time to give up on the Dell and go get another phone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
