"Download Unsuccessful" Android Market

Hi all!

Has anyone else had this problem? I've search the forum but can't fine anything specific.

When I try and install an App from the Android market place, it says "starting download" but then in the status bar I get "download unsuccessful".

It started nearly 24 hrs ago when I tried to download the official facebook app. The only modification I've made to the phone is unlocking to T-mobile and buying a class 4 16gb SD card a few weeks ago.

So far I've tried:

Unmounting and taking the battery / SD card out.

"force stop" and "clear cache" on the market app

Tried to do the same to "market updater" but don't get this option.

Apart from a factory re-set, does anyone else have any ideas?

Could it be that it's just so busy because of the new release of Angry Birds?

Try logging in and out of google. Then try when logged in to google talk.

Those Damn angry birds! - Actually got my mate to try on his phone and the market works for him so I think its confused somewhere.

Tried to sign out of log out and also delete my account but the only way of doing so seems to be a factory reset. Even tried recreating.

Guess its all pointing to a reset. boooo...

as an update - when I try and remove the google account it says that some applications are using it and I need to reset the phone to factory default to do it. I can add and delete other google accounts so something must be up with it. grrr.

I had a Market issue at pretty much the same time as you. I sorted it by re-registering on my network (T-mobile) by switching to 2G signal only, then back to 3G signal. I cancelled my downloads and tried again and all was well.

Could have been a coincidence, mind you.

For what it's worth, there do seem to lots of report ongoing problems with the Market:

Are the problems down to the run-up to the release of Gingerbread, I wonder?

You'd have thought that Google might be able to afford some reasonable servers...

Yeah, the market has been pretty flaky for the past several weeks now

I remember when this first happened I thought it was the ROM and went back to a previous version and when that didn't work went to another version

It wasn't until I checked my HTC Magic and try download something on that that it dawned on me that it was the market not the device 0_o

Try the following:

Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Market > Clear cache

It often fixes weird download issues in the market.

Thanks but I'd already tried that.

Its now gone from bad to worse. Thought I'd try an a factory reset but when I try it, the popup comes up and says "Factory Data Reset - Rebooting..." and just hangs there. I've given it 45 minutes but it does nothing. IF I press the home button it goes back to home. I can also turn the power off but its as though nothing has happened when I switch it back on.

Any ideas? If I can't do a factory reset then something is clearly up with it!

just another update with a couple of other things I've tried.

Tried this:

Close all your open application

Click on Application -> Settings -> Application -> Manage Applications

Click on menu and select Filter -> All

Now look for Checkin Service -> Clear data -> OK

Now look for Download Manager -> Clear data -> OK

Now look for Google Talk Service -> Clear data -> OK

Now look for Market -> Clear cache -> OK

Also tried switching to 2g and then back

Also tried changing my google account password and resigning in.

Also tried pressing the reset button that's above the sim card.

Started off not wanting to reset phone. Now would just love to be able to start again. Really don't want to have to send this back...

Like I said in my previous post, its not really the handsets that are stopping you from downloading form the market, its the market

This happened to me last night after a fresh flash of froyo onto my DELL Streak I couldn't download a thing, but I just left it till the morning and it worked fine [until I used mybackup pro, but that a whole different story]

Well hopefully I'll be able to use the Market again at some point. Its been 24hrs now though.

The fact that I can't reset the phone to factory default is worrying. I'm really hoping its all connected somehow but I'm doubtful. Will post back if anything starts happening.

FIXED - kind of!

It involved a factory reset. I was having trouble doing the reset so posted over here: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...ory-data-reset/ before I found a way around the problem I was having. Try the above link if anyone can't remove their google account and can't do a factory reset.

Basically after the reset I had to re-enter the account details. I'm pretty sure that's what solved the market problem.

Just to see what happens, I tried to remove the account again but it says I have to do a factory reset as applications are using the account. Pretty annoying if the problem arises again and I have to reset every time I just want to remove and add my google account.

thanks for everyone's help!

Yes, the market is back up and running to full capacity [for now]

This sort of thing is not specific to your device, there was no need to go to all the effort you did

I have three devices HTC Magic, DELL Streak and ZTE Blade all of which when I tried to download form the market said the same thing - download unsuccessful

OK - well next time I'll leave it more than 36 hours - because this was a massive hassle!

Having said that, I did try the market just before I finally managed to reset my phone and it wasn't working. I also had the problem that I couldn't reset my phone (until pressing the volume button). Once I'd reset the phone, the market worked straight away.

I guess that it could all have been connected to something flakey going on between my account and the market. Maybe my account needed to clear the failed downloads but had got in some weird loop with some strangeness in the market. Maybe it would have cleared itself eventually.

Is there any official way that I can check if the market is have experienceing problems?

LOL I know, I did the same when this first happened abt 5 weeks ago now. Then when I found people on other phones were having the same issue I decided to check on a different phone before flashing new roms and what not

i think your problem is related to gmail ,did you recently set change your googlemail to gmail ? if so thats what it was as i had the same problem and had to change back to googlemail instead of gmail ! otherwise market downloads just would not go past the starting download screen

two ways to sort this reset the phone and re enter correct gmail details

or

just change back to googlemail instead of gmail as i did using skyfire as i was determined to do this via the handset lol

I hadn't made any changes to Gmail / Google mail except once it had already started playing up when I changed the password.

If it happens again though I'll be sure to check this out.

Cheers
