Desire with black screen when turned on

Hi.

I have just recently bought a second hand Desire under the pretext that it was damaged and only good enough for spares or repairs. Basically this is a bit of a project for me with the added bonus of hopefully getting a Desire at the end of it.

The phone is in great nick and looks virtually new but when you turn it on it shows the HTC load screen with a black bar running through it. When it has fully booted up the buttons light up, it plays a little ditty and vibrates but the screen remains black with two white vertical bars at either side.

I can put it into recovery mode and have tried installing from backup but to no avail. I've mounted the sd card to my mac by using the recovery menu but it seems that the card is completely empty.

I've tried to flash the phone using Revoke on my mac and a couple of different images as well as the default image that comes with Revoke but it makes no difference.

To be honest I'm not sure what state the phone is in because of the black screen. So, for all I know the phone might not be in USB Debug mode that the REvoke tutorials ask you to set.

The Bootloader is 0.83.0001. So could this be an issue with the SLCD screen that I've read about?

So. Is there a way to completely reset this phone without knowing what state the phone is in. I'm pretty sure its not bricked as it powers up and responds to my button pushing. I'm not bothered about losing root or debranding at this stage. It would be nice to have a rooted Desire but a working one is more of a priority.

By the way I am a complete noob when it comes to this sort of thing. I know little bits but not enough to work this out on my own.

I hope that you can help me out.

Best Regards

I doubt it. You would have a black screen because it wouldn't be working at all. What you're describing sounds to me like a screen or a motherboard problem not a driver problem.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

If think ehe screen does work because I can get into recovery, fastboot etc and can navigate through the menus fine using the volume buttons, the power button and the track pad and I can see the HTC logo at startup.

My problem is that beyond the Revoke app I don't know what else to do. I can't access the operating system to check that USB debugging is selected or to make sure that charge only is selected so I don't know if Revoke didn't work because of the phone settings or because of something else.

Regards

If everything including the screen works in recovery why don't you just download the correct RUU file and update the phone? I never used it but it should work.

 Oops. I didn't realise that if I could enter recovery then the phone was already rooted and as such I could quite easily install whatever ROM I wanted already.

So now I've just uploaded a generic Froyo Rom the my SD card, renamed it update.zip, restored the phone and bingo. One rooted Desire running Froyo and running great. Ha! I love Android. Coming over from an iPhone this is like a breath of fresh air.

Thanks a lot

Great. Now you can also install a custom rom with a2sd+ which will save you some internal memory and you're set to go.

I'm glad that you've got it sorted. Have a nice time with your phone (not in a dirty way).

Can I ask why I would want to save internal memory. Is it for a performance boost or to allow more apps to run at once?

No. It's not about allowing more apps to run at once. It's about being able to have more apps on the phone itself.

a2sd+ needs an ext partition on a SD card and then it moves the apps and cache to that partition. You don't need it if you won't install any apps but it's a nice thing to have if you'll put apps on the phone.

Here is a nice link to explain it better:

Thats a great explanation. Thanks for the link. I think ap2sd+ is the way to go. I'll probably get myself a decent size card and keep the one I have as my goldcard. I'm used to having gigs and gigs of music and podcasts and I've already filled up the card I have since I flashed it this morning.

Thanks again for the link
