Guest Monkeyuk Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Hi, as a newbie on here, please excuse this question if it is answered elsewhere but I couldn't find it. I have just bought the Orange San Francisco to replace my HTC Hero on the Three network. I have also sent for a giffgaff sim to make use of the unlimited Internet. So, my question is, do I need to unlock the phone before I can change the ROM or will changing the ROM unlock the phone too? Basically how do I get my phone from the default config (on orange) to one of the other ROM's on Giffgaff? thanks in advance
Guest AndyHibberd Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 (edited) You'll need to unlock. (Actually 2.2 alpha ROM suggests you might not need to unlock, but r4 you will) I've been getting mine from ebay for 99p. Edited November 11, 2010 by AndyHibberd

(Actually 2.2 alpha ROM suggests you might not need to unlock, but r4 you will) I've been getting mine from ebay for 99p. The order I did it was unlock (used nccodes.co.uk - $3), and then root with Superboot, then load Clockwork and then you can load ROMs to your heart's content .

Thanks - once unlocked I presume the phone remains unlocked permanently? or could I use the code again?

You might consider it worthwhile to make sure early on that the phone is 'activated' on Orange (in case you ever want to use your £10 credit, for example). "Unlocking" it allows you to use other networks, but (regardless of unlocking) until 'activated' it cannot use Orange. And once unlocked, it should stay unlocked. (But with installing different roms, it won't necessarily stay 'rooted'.)

Yes, the phone stays unlocked forever, though in theory, if it did get locked again (I don't know of any way this can happen), since the code is based on the IMEI, you could use the same code again.

Again thanks for your assistance - now to actually do it
Guest oh!dougal Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 ... though of course you can activate the SIM card at any point, including after it's unlocked. ... Just to clarify -- its actually the PHONE that needs to be 'activated' on Orange, not the SIM. Hence the early reports (search and see) of Orange contract sims "not working" with brand-new SFs.

It's interesting that handsets don't need activating on T-Mobile.
