Solved my Wi-Fi problem

Sorry if i've got you all excited with the thread title but all i've done is get a new router.

My problem was when my wi-fi switched off or was out of range of my Netgear DG834G V5 it would never reconnect again unless i rebooted the router.

However, today a friend needed a PC problem fixing and as payment gave me a Netgear DGN2000

Now my SF connects all the time, happy days!

I have more or less the router you replaced (mine has a T on the end of the model number). I have to have an app to reconnect my wifi when I unlock the screen. Is this what you fixed by replacing the router or did you have some other wifi problem?

nvm... re-read your post more carefully. I'm tired lol. I've never had to reboot my router.

I have the same router as you (Netgear DG834G) and I'm also getting the same problem. It will connect fine first time but when I go out of range, or disconnect my wifi manually, I can never reconnect unless I reboot the router. As you can imagine this is a major annoyance and I don't want to have to spend money on a new router. Is there another fix perhaps, or is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Oh, and so far this only seems to happen on the DG834G as I have tested it on a mate's Netgear WGR614 and had no such problems.

I use a Thomson router and it works ok.

I have the wi-fi fix app just in case.

My Netgear DG834G V3 has never needed a reboot for the SF to connect.

I'm guessing you might have a V5 ???

Grrr, just registered to report that I too am suffering the exact same problem with my DG834G v5

This is my problem in detail (to help with a fix *fingers crossed*):

  1. The phone connected to my router for the first time without a problem.
  2. The internet works with no problems.
  3. I leave the phone, so the screen turns off.
  4. WiFi needs to reconnect upon unlock. It tries to, but cycles through: Connecting--->Disconnected--->Connecting(ad infinitum)
  5. Sometimes it will also say my router is 'Out of Range - Remembered.' (This goes away if I switch the WiFi off and on again but it still fails to connect).
  6. If the router is reset this problem goes away and I can tell that the connection attempt to my router will be successful when it gives the 'Identifying IP Address' status message.
This problem is doubly painful with the wifi disconnect bug because it means that I cannot leave the wifi connection as always on when at home.

I have tried a ton of 'fix' apps to no avail. In the 'WiFi Issue' thread, some report fixing the problem by changing the security mode (WEP, WPA, ect) or changing the key to a 13 digit alphanumeric code. Neither of those fixes worked for me either. Interestingly, one person reported it fixed after restoring an old backup file. Is it possible that the backup file contains a previous firmware version which did not carry this issue? Unfortunately, I have no access to any old backups for my Netgear.

I bought this new router a month ago and it's been nothing but trouble. It also blocks my TF2 server lists because it thinks it's a DOS attack. However, I'm reluctant to send even MORE money replacing faulty routers.

Edit: Is there a way to force the phone to request a new IP address every time it has to reconnect to the router? That may fix the problem.

Akrios, if you fancy trying different phone software, it would be excellent if you could try (at least) one of the roms based on the French (Bouygues Telecom) version of the phone.

This does have a newer version of the wifi software. (And Sebastian404's roms in particular shouldn't turn your phone all French!)

We don't yet know whether this wifi update solves the "need to reboot the router to reconnect" problem.

It would be good to have someone who has this specific problem try out the newer wifi software.

Orange are believed to be working on a software revision of some sort. But there aren't any details as yet, other than that its still a 2.1 Android.

You may find that the phone would reconnect more happily after you manually shut down wifi, rather than have phone sleep cut it off rudely.

Extending the time before the phone goes to sleep of its own accord would be useful with that tactic.

And using a Home screen widget to turn the wifi on and off would make it slightly less painful (-IF- the tactic works!)

The other thing for you to be aware of is that if the charger (or usb) is connected, the phone doesn't actually go to sleep. Ever. Just as long as its on external power.

So, combine that with setting wifi to sleep "Never" (Wifi Settings then press Menu to get Advanced settings) means that you could have it never drop the connection as long as you have the phone on external power. That Advanced setting is obeyed on external power, but not on battery. (I'm beginning to think that, on battery, having this set to 'never' could be counter-productive, because when the phone goes to sleep, the wifi may not be prepared for the resulting cut off.)

But these are just suggestions for possible workarounds for a problem that needs ZTE (the manufacturer) to fix. Thus far they have not released their wifi software source, so, lacking that, its unlikely that anyone else is going to be able to develop a fix. ZTE are aware of the existence of problems with the wifi.

It might even be that the fix is already in the French phones. Certainly worth a try, unless you fancy buying a different router (and selling yours on eBay!)

Ok just downloaded Sebastian404's de-bouyguesed lite ROM. I wiped data/factory and cache partitions and installed the ROM, but unfortunately that hasn't seemed to fix the problem on my phone.

Rebooted the router and enabled wifi, connected fine first time. Disabled wifi on my phone, waited a little bit, and then turned it on again and now I get the connecting-disconnecting-connecting-disconnecting cycle.

Ohhh scoula, I literally had my finger on the 'wipe data' button. This has saved me some time.

Is this the ROM in question?

oh!dougal - I have tried to manually disconnect from wifi before a screen lock and it unfortunately didn't help. As soon as the first connection to the router is broken, the phone can never reconnect successfully unless the router is rebooted.

Hmmm I may have to ebay my current router after all...

Yeah that's the one I tried. Have you tried the froyo ROM? Interested to see if that helps...

Edit: Ok just tried 'gforums' froyo ROM and that didn't fix it

There is another workaround that I should have mentioned in this context.

"Wifi never sleep" should be obeyed on battery IF (and for now only if) you are running software that allows the screen to go off, but otherwise prevents the phone's computer from going to sleep.

Examples of such software would be 'MyLock' and music players.

Naturally, running such software would reduce the battery runtime hours. But it might greatly reduce the number of router reboots!

Thanks to those who tried installing the current French roms and FroYo.

I think we can say that as of now, there is no phone software that solves the "only way to reconnect is to reboot the router" wifi-router-compatibility problem.

Over to you ZTE - and the Netgear DG834G v5 would seem to be a clear demonstration example to replicate the anomaly.

This is a solid reproducible problem (not an intermittent one) and as such it should be easier to isolate and fix.

Whether or not this an extreme example of the occasional "have to turn phone wifi off and then on again to reconnect" problem, I don't know.

There may be a single underlying cause, but certainly with particular router models (and versions) the ultimate consequence is different.

If your problem can be worked around by a wifi off then on, then there are MANY apps that will automate that for you.

But its important to recognise that those apps will not help if your only solution has been to reboot your router!

no a rom wont make a difference, it is the radio used in the phone that has been updated, i mean the baseband version not fm radio

and there is no available radio image out there

A little information is dangerous ...

the baseband controls the GSM radio.. the part of the device that is a mobile phone... there is a also a FM radio, along with Wifi and bluetooth...

The Bouygues ROM has a new version of the WiFi driver, while it did not fix my problems it would at least get connected to my Wifi untill I restarted it, thats a lot more than I got with the OUK ROMS. try it and see, you never know...

I had this problem with my DG834G v4 and my Samsung Galaxy S not connecting (cycled scanning, connecting, disconnecting infinitely). All I did was to change the wifi encryption from WEP-128 bit to WPA and generated a new passphrase and it worked immediately. Funnily enough my friend has the DG834G v3 and it is on WEP and I can connect to it without any trouble.

This seems to be a driver problem which only occurs when connection to specific APs.

I experienced the same issue on my home AP too, but what now seems to have fixed it is a different driver/firmware for the atheros wifi chip which was built by stackrish - many thanks to him :-) (check his original post here

Install the zip via recovery and please report back!

That zip uses the Amend update script format, and I'm using Clockwork Recovery 3.0.0.6, which requires Edify format. Is it available anywhere in Edify format?

Thanks!

UPDATE: I cobbled together my own Edify updater-script, and it seemed to install OK (I got the expected messages from the script and no errors) but my problem remains (Linksys WAG54G2 router, firmware V1.00.19: restart the router, phone connects OK, turn WiFi on the phone off and on again, and then every time it connects it immediately disconnects, until I restart the router again). Not sure if this is because the Atheros firmware didn't get updated, or because it doesn't actually fix this problem :(

I'm going to try to attach my hacked-up zip in case anyone can verify whether it successfully installs...

Having spent several hours on this, I decided life was too short and just bought a new router. Netgear DGND3300v2 works fine. Obviously there's some incompatibility between the Linksys router and the Blade WiFi, but other phones (notably my Nokia E72) have no problem with it.

ALL!! As I did not find a conclusive answer to the netgear-blade wifi problem, I decided to post my solution.

I also could not reconnecty after sleep...tried all kinds of workarounds and guess what?!

After changing the WPA2 key to a new one - 18 characters long, I reconnect without issues!( got the v5 netgear)

CheersFolks!

:( Ummm, worked like 3 times...with "blade wifi fix" installed...now trying without..

Seems to work, will confirm later...:)

Ok, that was not it...I now disabled "keep existing wireless settings" in the router's advanced menu, seems to work for now..

Hmm, none of those..

However, I looked up the "attached devices" when connected, and reserved th IP address under "LAN IP config" by copy pasting MAC address & Device Name.

+ set the phone wifi "sleep policy to "never when connected" since this morning I reconnected on every attempt. Will follow up.. although nobody seems to read this... :)
