Ah, the last one besides Toti has gone. Such a pity.

BTW: My rom version r6 runs now absolutely smooth and is fast responding. The best rom I ever had (I tried every rom since Pauls 1.5)

My settings are:

ROM cm6-aio v6

Clean install without any settings from previous ROMs

UK update

Class6 card

692 mhz kernel

*SetCPU 245-692mhz ondemand

32m vm-heap

26% compcache

JIT activated

Home/MMS-app in memory

DtA2SD active

Launcher Pro

*lowmem-optimum

*cachesd

*swappy is standart

Try it your self.

Everything is and will be perfect untill you install some apps that stays as services.

Some widgets perhaps,or the players, or even the new market app.

And even the setcpu.

Those apps eats the ram like crazy staing as service.

And that's our bigbest problem, not enough ram memory.

Not the CPU, but the ram!

So from nowon we should all understand that:

Our Pulse is the best low ram smartphone, because we will never get something better from this phone.

Even if we get bug free froyo or ginger?

We'll still have issues because of the ram.

The tweak I add in my backup - v7 rom.

Reduce the impact of the low amount of ram memory.

But I don't know why do you have those issues?

People, please understand me!

That's why Cyanogen doesn't support phones like this!

We'll always have issues reports for this phone.

Low internatl and ram memory!

And even damn slow speed of the internal memory.

4mb/s write and 10mb/s read is slow as hell comparing to 6-12mb/s write and 12-18 read (Phones Like Samsung Galaxy s, or even the ZTE Blade).

:P

Let this phone stay as legent!

Already It is a miracle!

Even the swap and compcache couldn't help with the lack of ram memory!

And why?

Simply Swap isn't real ram, and it's depend of the sdcard speed.

Compcache is reducing the ram in exchange of caching the apps.

Both of compcache and swap are charging the CPU.

So not verry big speed increasing.

And about the multitasking?

If you start more then 3-4 apps in the ram as background apps?

Well?

You will overload the CPU.

And why?

Part of compressing the apps to swap or compcache, part for managing the apps, and part to manage with the lack of ram memory.

So once again the ram problem.

I'm telling you this once again.

We have pretty stable FLB mod

And pretty stable CM6 rom

Wheter it is the tom's cm6 v40 or Richards cm6 aio v1-7?

Personally, I really doupt that Tom has both of time and interests to continue with devepoments for Pulse.

Since all good developers has left.

Why Tom should stay with Pulse?

I Really LOVE MY PULSE!

YES I DO!

And for that reason I gave my best to make it work perfect.

But I don't know who could help us?

Now it isn't a question of Software, but Hardware!

You can only blame Huawei for that.

But I won't.

How much you pay, so you'll get!

Try it your self.

With a few differences, that is very similar to my setup.

Here are my differences (the rest are the same):

I'm using my own "tweak" mod as the base rom.

(I'm guessing "692" is a typo and you are really using Starkos 691 kernel, yes?)

SetCPU 245-576mhz ondemand (most of the time, for battery saving)

Compcache disabled (I'd really like to understand the benefits of Compcache, particularly if I already have swap enabled.)

Swap partition of 32mb

ADW Launcher 1.3.6 (system)

Lowmem is still at default

Swappy set to 20 (I really have terrible lag when it's left at the "standard"; what is the standard, 60?) [Edit: looks like AIO is 30 for a standard; maybe I'll try that for a while and see if it works well for me too.]

I don't have any problems with FC's or things getting stuck or whatever at those settings. YMMV.

The tweak I add in my backup - v7 rom.

Reduce the impact of the low amount of ram memory.

But I don't know why do you have those issues?

People, please understand me!

I am trying to. But I am having a hard time understanding. I'd like to test it out, but I lack the knowledge to understand what it is I need to do.

Can you give me just that tweak with nothing else changed in some form that I can add to the rom I'm already using? I'm sorry if you already did this, and I missed it. If you did, please point me to the post

Stability is more important to me than raw speed. So I run at 576mhz only.

Also, I have to have enough battery savings to get through a whole day without having to recharge.

I am running Beautiful Widgets Home/Weather widget which is huge in memory footprint, as well as two instances of Android Agenda Widget (also quite large) and the Music widget. Oh, and I have Swype running continuously, so that is very large too.

I also have ADW Launcher running, as well as whatever Android puts into memory itself.

So I think that is a lot of memory already being used up.

If you have something that can make my phone run better without sacrificing stability and battery, I'd love to try it.

But I need you to explain how to do it in simple terms.

I do not have a computer programming background, and I am too old to figure out complicated instruction. :P

Thanks for you effort.

I gonna explain it pretty simple! :D

Don't worry!

It is really so simple to understand.

It's all about the lowmemory killer.

By default in init.rc it is set:

# be killed. These numbers are in pages (4k).
setprop ro.FOREGROUND_APP_MEM 1536
setprop ro.VISIBLE_APP_MEM 2048
setprop ro.SECONDARY_SERVER_MEM 4096
setprop ro.BACKUP_APP_MEM 4096
setprop ro.HOME_APP_MEM 4096
setprop ro.HIDDEN_APP_MEM 5120
setprop ro.CONTENT_PROVIDER_MEM 5632
setprop ro.EMPTY_APP_MEM 6144
[/codebox]

And because the numbers are in pages of 4KB

In MB:# be killed.

[codebox]
These numbers are in MB.
setprop ro.FOREGROUND_APP_MEM 6
setprop ro.VISIBLE_APP_MEM 8
setprop ro.SECONDARY_SERVER_MEM 16
setprop ro.BACKUP_APP_MEM 16
setprop ro.HOME_APP_MEM 16
setprop ro.HIDDEN_APP_MEM 20
setprop ro.CONTENT_PROVIDER_MEM 22
setprop ro.EMPTY_APP_MEM 24

And write it in write /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree

# Define the memory thresholds at which the above process classes will
# be killed. These numbers are in pages (4k).
setprop ro.FOREGROUND_APP_MEM 1536
setprop ro.VISIBLE_APP_MEM 2048
setprop ro.SECONDARY_SERVER_MEM 4096
setprop ro.BACKUP_APP_MEM 4096
setprop ro.HOME_APP_MEM 4096
setprop ro.HIDDEN_APP_MEM 6400
setprop ro.CONTENT_PROVIDER_MEM 8960
setprop ro.EMPTY_APP_MEM 10240

echo "1536,2048,4096,6400,8960,10240" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree
[/codebox]

Where did I touch?

Well:

[code]setprop ro.HIDDEN_APP_MEM 6400 = 25MB setprop ro.CONTENT_PROVIDER_MEM 8960 = 35MB setprop ro.EMPTY_APP_MEM 10240 = 40[/code]

Well I'll upload a zip file with the script.

Simply unzip it, and push it in your phone the path is /system/etc/init.d/

Ok!

Take care of your self.

And best wishes to all of you pulse owners!

OK, thanks, I've managed to download, but now every time I boot and come to the screen with the keyboard testing, it FC's. I try to advance past that screen and I get a message saying the process com.huawei.SetupWizardEx has stopped working. I did do a full wipe and tried rewiping and then reflashing 4 times and it still occurs. Is there a way to completely disable that part and go straight to my homescreen?

Bumping once again :P Please...

Bumping once again :P Please...

if you wanna skip the whole setup process, you should keep that "provisioning.apk"

once you removed it, you have to put "SetupWizardEx.apk" back into your rom

SetupWizardEx.apk can be found in "gapps" package

they're only required during the first boot and can be safely removed afterward

AntonioPT!

I think so that you should add the changes in the kernel it self.

So My script won't be needed.

But in that cacse Swap will be the best options to reduce the impact of the lowmemory_killer from killing the background apps, and let them be cached to the swap.

And the default spwappiness should be set to 30%, because of that:

As bigger the swappy is as bigger the lag is.

And

As lower the swappy is as bigger the impact of the lowmem killer is.

So the best value of swappines will be 30%

You can add all of this parameters directly into init.rc in the boot.img

Also I have something interesting for you.

The Ext partition can be mounted by default in the init.rc

As well as the sdcard.

So this will help people loosing dta2sd script.

I one word.

everything could be done in boot time by init.rc

If you are interest simply msg me and I'll show you how to do this.

Even it is possible to mount the ext partition as /data

:P

LoL!

In that case If you have high calss sdcaard?

Well pretty cool!

Isn't it?

Just msg me please.

I gonna show you how to do it.

Best regards

Thanks Toti. I will do my best tonight to make this work. But I can't take the time today as I am supposed to be working at my job. :P

But before I get started, please help me understand two things:

1. Why is this superior to just adjusting the "lowmem" setting via DT Apps2SD? Can't I achieve the same things there?

2. If, as you explained elsewhere, this always leaves a large chunk of memory "available", doesn't that mean that the system is continuously dumping apps whenever you load a new app, making sure that there is always 25mb free? I don't understand why having a large chunk of memory just sitting there waiting is desirable. (But this question probably just shows my ignorance of how computer memory works.) :P

On a completely different note, there was nothing I could do to get AIO v7 to run. I got only bootloops (and, strangely, it kept rebooting into Recovery!). I tried replacing the kernel. I tried editing the rom to remove unnecessary apps and free up space. Nothing worked, and I gave up. I have no idea how anyone is getting it to install. It must be a miracle. :D And, there is a lot of extraneous "stuff" floating around in that rom. For example, what's up with the /system/dropbox folder and all the stuff in there? I don't know if any of that is necessary, but doesn't that also add to the size of the rom so it won't fit in smaller partitions?

Just to confirm troubles with AIO v7.

After clean reset, with 691MHz Kernel, it did run without WIFI, it couldn't get an IP Address, (Strange).

All the eforts to keep my old data resulted in bootloops.

AIO v6 was running OK with 691MHz Kernel.

Toti, I installed your script. Other than installing it, is there anything else you suggest to optimize?

(You can see the settings I use in one of my posts above.)

Where will I see the most evidence of improvement from this script?

What can I look for to confirm things are better?

(You can see the settings I use in one of my posts above.)

Where will I see the most evidence of improvement from this script?

What can I look for to confirm things are better?

As I already said!

The best value to stop lowmemory killer from dumping the apps to free up memory is using swap!

After some tests I get that the best swappy value is 30% if you use about 32-64MB of swap partition

If you use higher swappy partition lower the swappiness.

That combination you will always get free space for the system.

And why do we need this at least 25MB free ram?

Well!

This is crucial for the system.

When you start up new app the system will use thos 25MB of ram to start the app.

And the lowmemorry will kill, or cache other background apps to swap.

And again keep 25mb ram for other apps to be started.

So the system is using this ram.

But if you start to mach services, they will littery eat the ram. And you will get without that 25mb of ram.

So this is the thing I need to learn how to kill the unneaded services automaticly.

If it's possible.

Go to Settings>Applications>Running services

to check which services are running!

Also you can check it in terminal.

service list

But there you will get info of the services running under linux and android as well!

And what will happend if your system left without enough free ram?

Wel in most cases CPU overloading and System lag!

And in extreme case kernel panic, and reboot of the system.

Read this!

And also here is something interesting

Yes it is trough that linux will use all of the ram.

BUT!

In /dev/block/ we have 8 ram partitions

from ram0 to ram7

each one is 16MB

8x16=128

So now here is one verry bigg question!

Why does our Pulse have 128MB of ram and anywhere it is written 192MB of ram?

Well?

I stil don't know the answer!

And another question!

when you type free in the terminal it says 107MB of ram?

Well?

Anything the applications don't use will eventually be used for file buffers and cache, to make reading the files much faster.

But I still didn't get the answer of my question!

Hah?!!

Typing the command (free) in the terminal I get this?!!

total used free shared buffers

Mem: 107488 105328 2160 0 260

Swap: 62524 31464 31060

Total: 170012 136792 33220

You get part of the answer now.

But why then in applications lyke SystemPanel, or any task manager I get that I have much more than 2MB of free ram memory?

Ahaaaaaaa!!!!!!

Here is your Answer!

And just to be sure type:

a2sd sysinfo

and take a look under the Memory sector

Whit that question you get the answer of it!

In realiity the ram it is used, but virtualy it is free!

Because it is cached, or better said, the system is used as unused free ram.

And that's why we need the virtually free ram for launching the apps.

And that's why google add the lowmemory_killer in the android.

But that adjustments are ment for devices with bigger ram.

And thy virtualy necver get that low.

And for that reason we need to re-adjust the lowmemory_killer for our Low memory SmartPhone.

But to prevent the agresive killing of the background apps by the lowmem killer we need swap.

And why I prefer this script than dta2sd?

They have bug in there.

If in a2sd you set the lowmem killer to lowmem-moderate?

Well in that case because of some yet unknown bug you won't be abble to set the swappy.

It'll get fixed to 1

And no matter what you are trying to do you will always get the swappy set to 1

So no swap!

Now did you understand me?!

I hope that I explain well enough to you for making it work?!!

Best regards

Somebody posted that it is because the libsurfaceflinger_client.so is missing in system/lib it is here in Richard's dropbox

Toti, I tried this patch, but the phone was very unstable and the telephone app crashed while receiving calls. Without this and swappiness at 20 my phone is much smoother.

Thanks for the reply. I "think" I understand the explanation.

I find that last bit very interesting, because it seems I have experienced this happening (but I can't be sure).

Sometimes it seems that setting lowmem-moderate is beneficial, especially right after I did it.

But then other times it seems that just leaving it at default is better over the long term.

So in your experience/understanding, if someone has set lowmem-moderate, can they later go back to lowmem-default and fix the problem you are describing?

Or is it that once the bug has started, it remains no matter what someone does?

In other words, is this only a problem with "lowmem-moderate", and not a problem with all other DT memory settings (other "lowmem-????" settings)?

Edit: Bigger problem. The script doesn't seem to have done anything. I have verified that it is in /system/etc/init.d/

But after running the command "a2sd check", the Low Memory Killer Settings are listed as: 1536,2048,4096,5120,5632,6144.

But those are the default numbers, not the numbers your script was supposed to set.

I re-read your instructions carefully, but only see that I was supposed to push the "07lomem" file into /system/etc/init.d/, which I did and verified.

What's the problem?

Edit2: I noticed that the DT Apps2SD script is listed as 10. I'm going to guess that means that it's settings will override your script's setting at 07. That is nothing more than a guess, as I don't really know how all of this works. If I have a moment to experiment, I will rename your script to 11 and see if it then is able to change the lowmem settings.

Edit3: Yes, ok, I changed the name of your script to 12lowmem and it worked. So apparently it must be set at a higher number than the apps2sd script. So now my settings are: 1536,2048,4096,6400,8960,10240. Swappiness is still at 30.

I will run this for a while and see if there are any noticeable positive or negative effects. It's hard to know how much is just me "believing" things are better or not. Is there any way to definitively test the results of this change?

The bug is with all of the lowmem adjustments in dta2sd!

I'm still looking for it!

I just cant find the lines in that scipts of dta2sd, but ok!

And about testing?

Well simply try the multitasking!

You will notice that it'll keep about 3-4 apps in ram with no problem , and even more My experience is up-to 9 apps, and still the phone is working just perfect!

Speed and stability!

I don't have any reboots, no FC, In one word no problems at all!

Even I can't imagine how can it be? Only one simple adjustment over the lowmem killer and I get awesome performance of the phone.

That was one of the magic sript I wanted to show you!

Buye the way I was trying to unleash the need of ext partition.

But I gaveup.

Since dta2sd is umounting the sdcard right after my script mounted in boot time

So I can't move the apps, apps-private, and dalvik-cache folders to /mnt/sdcard/.a2sd/

And symlink them to /data/

And that was the reason why I gaveup!

But Now I'm expecting a replay from AntoinoTP!

I just show him how to inject the a2sd in the init.rc

And even so how to mount the sdcard as /data during first initialize of the system during boot.

And so with high class of sdcard we will get as much as we want /data space!

Just imagine if you have 8GB class6 sdcard and you partition it with 64MB swap and 1GB ext partition?

LOL!

But in that case he'll have to spoil dta2sd in init.rc.

I show him how to do that to!

So now I'm waiting for his replay!

Ok guys! Now some good news! I re-edit and repack the aio v7.

Now it fits with the uk rom.

I found oup why the wifi doesn't connect and fix it.

It contains gapps, I cnow that I'm not alowed to do that, but simply I don' have time to remove them.

I'll make new one torow without the gapps.

I'm uploading the rom right now. And I'll write the link here.

I gonna make vanila stile rom to.

But all that tomorrow.

And please makr a backup of your apps and your contacts and sms and before flashing this rom perform a full wipe.

Because I tweak the dta2sd to move dalvik-cahce to sd-ext.

Also please do not forget to partition your sdcard befori flashing.

Do not try to play with a2sd swap or swappy.

You will broke it.

Simply everything os set to optimum. Also do not play with the lowmem-killer.

You will broke my boost script.

Simply flash and use it.

Everything is set to optimum.you can only move the dalvik-cache to the internal memory if you want to.

And I do not suggest you to activate compche.

The best value of the swap partition is between 32-64mb

If you like it please don't thanks me, but thanks to Richard.

Because I only boost his work.

The kernel I use is the AntonioTP's kernep.

If you want to I'll upload you a script that will lower down the frequency to the desired one, becquse this kernel is OC to 710mhz

Best regards

Toti
