DO NOT SWITCH FROM GOOGLEMAIL TO GMAIL

Spent a lot of time last night trying to figure out why on earth i cannot download anything from market as it would just stay on the "starting download" screen only to discover the problem lied with me changing @gmail.com from googlemail !

so to get it working i had to revert back to @googlemail from gmail account settings which you cant access from the handset unless you use skyfire or by using your pc

or the other option was to reset the phone and start again to enter the right login details on startup which i did not want to do as this woud involve backing up and restore of apps etc etc , there is no option in settings to delete the google account and put a new you can only add a new account but then this would not recognize the @gmail

so my advice is not to swith your googlemail to gmail UK users as i think us has been on gmail for some time

Just clear the data and cache from your google apps and sign in again. Easy.

How does one switch a Googlemail account to GMail?

I found that mail sent to <user>@gmail.com from a user that originally registered as <user>@googlemail.com reach the user just fine.

you can use either address its the same one just a different name - if you have agooglemail address you can change it by going to gmail on your computer and its in the settings there

Aha, thanks!

I wondered if this might be the cause of a issue I'm having. One of my SanFran's is not syncing or receiving its associated Googlemail account - It DOES send though.

My gmail.com account works just fine.

But was that the address you registered with your SanFran?

Perhaps some people are having this Market issue when they initially registered their phone with .googlemail addresses and then later switched to a gmail?

If it's only the Market having issues then is it not possible to re-register and sync apps with a new Market account?

If I remember correctly, there is an option in your settings in Gmail to change this from googlemail to gmail or vice versa. What I can see on my phone when I input my account details it automatically puts in googlemail rather than the gmail which it actually is. Both should do the same and arrive at same destination. Gmail only shortened it as people were peeved with writing the long version of it in some countries.

Do Google forward any mail sent to your old Googlemail address to the new GMail one? I'd be tempted, but have things registered with the old address & it's not worth the hassle of trying to change my details with them too.

They state that the old googlemail address will continue to work in parallel, so yes

I have had my phone for just over a week, I already had a googlemail account from way back but when I came to use it, it was accepted when I signed in but when it came to downloading from the market the bar would sit there at "Starting Download" I had to switch my account to a gmail account to get it to work, it does state that you will receive emails sent to your account using both @google mail and @gmail addresses, I tried both of them and they both worked :D

Can someone please re-title this thread is it clearly isn't true and may be confusing to new memebers.

This is true as I have used Gmail from day 1 and not come across any problems. So A rename of the title might be in order as some people will get confused.
