WiFi signal issues

Just picked up my Desire HD today and it's a lovely phone.

However, the wifi connection is pitiful compared to anything else using my wifi. According to the Desire HD, the wifi signal is poor and it loses connection 6 metres away from the router whilst other devices (an iphone 4, an ipad and a laptop) say the signal is fine. I used to have a Nexus and it was fine on the same table where the Desire HD gets no wifi signal.

I have tried both holding the device and putting it on a table, so as to remove any antenna issues while moving away from the router.

Has anyone found this issue or should I expect wifi to be this poor? Is it something I could look into and get sorted?
