adb "error: closed" errors on both windows and linux

(I tried posting this a few days ago but I think I was having network errors and I can't find it on the forums so I'm reposting. If I've successfully posted this already could a mod link me to it and remove this post?)

I haven't been successful with adb since I got my streak. I'm able to do adb devices and see the streak (not ???????) no problem but any other command returns "error: closed". I wasn't too concerned with it, I figured I was doing something wrong with setting up the driver (I'm in ubuntu linux) but the error persists in Windows 7 so now I know it's something with the device. I'm running 4399 and the stock 4399 recovery with superboot to get rid of flashing lights.

I've seen a lot of other people talking about this on other posts and forums, so I thought I'd pool everything we know into one post. I'm going to keep my eyes open and try a few other ROM's and recoveries, I'll post back if I get it working with any combination of these.
