Replacing original apps with better ones

Hi all,

I know I can try it myself, but I am sure that there is somebody with experience of updating rom (/system/apps/) with own applications.

I want to get rid of double message notifications (I am using Handcent sms), so can I simply delete message.apk from zip package before flashing?

I also do not want to have browser there, news, and many other apps.

OR should I rename replacements with original name ? f.e. opera.apk with browser.apk

dont delete the message app as I believe Handcent & Chomp all use the default message app in some way.

Just go into messaging and disable notifications in that application and you will only get the notification from Handcent.

if you use Launcher Pro I believe you can hide applications in the application drawer.

Thanks. For ex. I don't use Twitter, news and weather, notepad... but with removing calendar and messages - good point, thanks.
