total n00b question

I have the standard SF albeit have have used busybox and universal androot to remove most of the orange &*&* from the phone.

What im wanting to know is what are the benefits of flashing the rom etc and could some one point me at the best one and with an idiots guide. ive read the clockwork recvoery thread but I dont understand the

In doing this would i loose all the apps ive already installed such as iGO sat nav, fancy widget etc?

Also if i wanted to increase the SD card size in my SF could i just copy the contents of this card to the new bigger card

which version of igo are you using as when i tried it it would only display on a corner of the screen
