Guest AntonioPT Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 (edited) As you've all noticed, ROM developing for the Pulse has come to an halt. We no longer have developers/ROM cookers like BigBearMDC, fibblesan and Tom G (inactive since 11/Nov). CM 0.3 was our last ROM. But I wish it wouldn't stay like this. I wish Tom G had published his port on github so folks like me could learn from his (great) work. Android 2.2 Froyo is our last ROM. For all of you who believe that 2.3 can run on our phones, let me say something to you. It is possible to port 2.3 to our phones, but it could never actually run on our phones. I'm sorry, but our phones are waaaay too low-end to support the CPU/memory power required by 2.3. I am not a developer. I can compile a Linux kernel, but I've never compiled an Android kernel. I never compiled an Android ROM. My only programming/development skills are Python and a little HTML/CSS. But I have the will to learn! All that I've learned about computers and Android, I've learned on my own! I believe a lot of people on this forum are like me. If we all get together, we can learn together, we can develop together! We can continue the work of Tom G, providing a better Cyanogenmod ROM! All of you Pulse users who believe that a "final" ROM is missing, a ROM to finally put an end to Pulse ROM development, join on me. As you're reading this, I am already compiling my first kernel for the Pulse. We'll cooperate, we'll chat together and we'll all work together, learning at the same time, to port (again) the Cyanogenmod ROM to our phones. Reply to this topic saying you want to enter this (newbie B)) development group, and I'll send you a PM. Cheers, AntonioPT EDIT: Tom is back, so I don't think there's any point in porting CM again. A new Pulse/U8230 guide would be nice, as the current guide is old and it no longer reflects what you can do with a Pulse. Edited November 26, 2010 by AntonioPT
Guest flip360 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 here, here B) although i dont think that Tom has left us but i agree on the 2.3 requirements, but if G1 has it so will we imho. cheers
Guest DanWilson Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 [CUT] Cheers, AntonioPT I will always be available for testing. Always. Think I'd be useless for any development though, although I might be able to give some helpful hints. You should set up a GTalk account for development, or MSN, I'll be able to help you more then. Sometimes I can't be bothered refreshing Modaco, and when that time comes, you'll need me so much! B)

Guest Sh4d0w940 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I agree with you guys, it would be great if Tom releases his code. I'm also planning to buy an Desire Z but I'd never ditch this great phone :) If this community stays alive so will the Pulse! B) ps. Dan you could do the comments in the code, otherwise it could get boring :) Sh4d0w940

Guest rulerofkaos Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I think it doesn't make any sense to port CM 6.1 again. We should ask Tom for the source so we can tweak it and fix the bugs.

I fully agree with you. But Tom has been inactive for almost 2 weeks and we don't know when he's coming back... Still, even if he goes active again and releases the source, this is a good opportunity for me and for many others to learn. Last time I checked, Tom already uploaded the source. He only uploaded the AOSP 2.2 port (vanilla froyo), he never uploaded the Cyanogen source...

Guest Epic-Emodude Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Im willing to try and help with any development. I dont really know much in terms of coding at the moment, although im starting to learn Java from an open university book for a course my dad did on "Object Orientated Programming in Java", and next year im hopping to go to college and study computing where ill learn some more java and other stuff (That might be to late tho) However Im really looking to get a new phone depending on pricing. I was planning on keeping my pulse till I go to uni (3 years time) because my parents wouldnt let me get a contract until today when they bought my sister a new phone on contract and told me "I can buy one if I want", so im hoping to either get a new phone (desire z maybe) either on contract, or sim free and stick my current sim in. I would stay with the pulse but its not a great phone, and not going anywhere in terms of development. Anyway, Im happy to help with any development I can. Aaron
Guest ultravox Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I'm in. I've a SGS but my wife owns a A1 B) it's quite ok for her needs. Thought to move for A5, but decided to stay. I'm quite new to linux and also Python, but I'm willing to give a hand. Cheers
Guest SpankyHam Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Regardless of the lack of power the pulse has, the fun is hacking it and getting it to do more than it could previously. More than willing to help in anyway I can. I am a test analyst and create automated scripts (using QTP and it's modified VBScript language), but don't do anything with java or linux.
Guest Daniel Williamson Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I was bored so came back to see how the development of the tmobile pulse has gone. Im happy with my galaxy s but its sad for me to see this, back in the day it was great meeting people who had this same amazing cheap phone as me. The tmobile pulse opened up a whole new world for me - and because of this £110 phone i am now applying to study mobile computing at university, with a view to doing android/linux development in the far future. It was truly saddening when I sold my pulse. I know no one will probably remember me but.. ahwell i still remember the likes of bigbear and Tom g. And who can forgot DanWilson aha - When people used to get us mixed up B) Anways going off topic now - Im just glad that you finally got 2.2 but also sad to find that everything had ended ;( Dan

He only uploaded the AOSP 2.2 port (vanilla froyo), he never uploaded the Cyanogen source... Getting Tom's CM mod out of beta and into a 99% bug free, stable version would be very nice. And toward that end, it would be "nice" if he would release the source so that others can work on it who have the ability, motivation and time. But as I half jokingly said elsewhere, all the the "work" I've done on my phone's rom has really taught me a lot, and that learning has its own value. Before February of this year, I didn't have a clue what an "apk" or "recovery" even was. It's been fun to learn.
Guest JohnPorter Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Well, can I just pose a question to you guys? Wouldn't it be cool to have a 2.2 ROM for the Pulse that we can call our own, I mean no Cyanogen branding etc? That would be a dream which I think may be achievable, start with the CM 6.1 and stripout all the Cyanogen stuff etc I'm sure between us we could think of a cool name and come up with some branding stuff....

Of course, but if we get a stable Cyanogen ROM, it will maybe be included into the Cyanogen development.

Guest ve100 Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 (edited) I would like to help. And I agree that it is important that we get to a stable and compliant rom version of an active development like cyanogenmod. then pulse will be carried along on all new development releases. otherwise, we end up at the same stage everytime android development moves ahead. we will have to start porting from scratch all over again. and the beauty of open source is that it will keep moving and getting better. i can still use a 10yr old laptop with the latest debian, and it is faster than a brand new flashing windows laptop n times more powerful. like the op, i am familiar hacking/compiling linux. though not much familiar with android development, i have learnt a lot in the past few months. happy to learn and contribute. i plan to keep my pulse for another year or so. i'm quite happy with the hardware for now, and i've brutally cut down the software leaving just what i need, helping make this enormously more efficient for me. for those who want to move on, at the very least you won't be a noob when you get a new phone. ps: is it worth having a forum/topic on the cyanogenmod site? we might be able to get those guys to add/contribute, particularly if we are trying to port their development. and i suspect there might be a lot more experts on cyanogenmod over there. i can see the interest waning on the pulse, and past experts moving on/away. cyanogen forums and wiki are fantastic resources and enormously useful. we don't have to recreate them, and much of that knowledge base is generic for all phone makes/models, including ours. just look at these two: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?titl...nel_from_source http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barebones may i also suggest using an irc channel on freenode, rather than using msn/gtalk/etc. Edited November 24, 2010 by ve100
