Guest charcope Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I'm on a pay monthly contract with Orange. I've swapped the sim into the San Fran and all is fine apart from the it only doing 2G/Edge and not 3G. I've considered calling up and fibbing that I lost my phone in the hope they send me a 3G sim as a replacement, but is there still 2g ones floating around?

Are you sure you are on Orange, and not on T-mobile? You can use both networks if you register for it, but on the other network you only get 2G. I am at T-mobile with my Pay Monthly, and when I am roaming on Orange I get 2G only. Anyway, Orange doesn't care which phone you are using. Just ask them for a 3G SIM card, or go to an Orange shop anbd explain you use your SIM card in a 3G enabled phone.
Guest charcope Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Well it switches between the Orange and T-mobile. I've asked for another sim to be sent out so hopefully it'll be a 3G one otherwise it'll be a trip to the shop. Right now it's on T mobile but it never picks up 3G. It does if I put the PAYG one in though.
Guest dragon2611 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I have an orange payg sim that doesn't allow 3G to be used since it came with a 2G phone Although I'd imagine if you ask orange they'd sort you out with a 3G simcard, it's highly unlikely they'll care that you changed the phone unless you happen to be using something that comes with a device specific data plan (e.g an Iphone or a Blackberry) and even then they'll probably just tell you that you need to switch to a different data addon or tarrif. I had no problems with O2 going from an I7500 (galaxy) > Blackberry > Pulse mini, I just asked them to swap my data bolt on when I'd bought the blackberry. Also had no issue getting them to remove BIS when I decided I didn't like the Blackberry (I think they're great when used with a BES but rubbish on BIS)

I'm on a Pay Monthly with data so it should be fine. Had just heard the horror stories about iPhone users and Orange.
Guest meinnit Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 (edited) I tried to get a 3G SIM but because I bought the contract with a 2G phone they wouldn't budge. Couldn't be bothered to complain etc. so I just gave up but I'm sure if you complained hard enough they will give you a 3G SIM. Edited November 24, 2010 by meinnit

I know they used to do that when 3G first became available, but thought they had become much more keen to give out 3G SIMs these days. Certainly for my PAYG SIM, I simply walked into an Orange shop and told them that I was now using my SIM in a 3G phone, and they happily gave me a new SIM - I just had to pay for a small topup with it (this was in July this year).

Still got 12 months on my Orange contract so stuck with them for now :-( Presumably if I want to buy out the contract it'll be £240.

I guess so. you can get out of contracts (most are unenforceable in the courts) but you have to be a bit brave and put up with a lot of hassle from them! and I doubt it would help your credit rating....
Guest deepmenace Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 Can u report back with your results? My brother is in same position.

I hassled them and escalated the complaint. They promised to send me a 3g sim....... ...... and sent a 2g sim. IDIOTS! maybe they can get you transferred onto a 3G sim if you pick up a 3G PAYG sim card??? I know they can tranfer accounts from sim to sim but sending you a 3g one when your current one is beyond their ability!
Guest triobot Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 a 3g sim won't work in a 2g phone, but as your on this side of the forum, one assumes you have or you're getting an orange SF. one way to get a 3g sim (my guess at least) would be calling up or going in store, saying you lost your phone and need a sim card because of your contract. More than likely they will send a 3g sim. But you could ask them specifically to send you a 3g sim.

Orange's system is just not set up to replace a 2g sim with a 3g one. I tried, failed and left them
Guest libretteer Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 a 3g sim won't work in a 2g phone, Yes it will! You won't get the 3G features of course, but (apart from some very old phones that can't cope with the extra phone book entries etc. on recent SIMs) it will work fine in a 2G phone.
