Guest crescentman Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 OK so I'm a newbie and probably being as blind as a bat but I can't find any instructions on how to root my phone. Please can anyone point me in the right direction. TIA
Guest Asselberghs Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 (edited) Your on the Desire forum so I presume your phone is a Desire. Go to Unrevoked.com download it for your Desire. If you are on Windows click the More Info? link, and download the HBoot drivers from the wiki. Once HBoot drivers is installed, unzip and open Unrevoked, connect your phone and let it work it´s magic. When it says Done, your phone is rooted. You might experience problems, I have and I don´t know why, nothing that harmed the phone it just diden´t complete, try to find the version before that then. 3.14 IIRC IF you encounter problems. This will also work under Linux and Mac OSX and there the HBOOT Drivers step isen´t nessesary. Edit: Unrevoked will root your phone and Install Clockworkmod recovery image. If you want a different one, if your new to this I guess you don´t care, clockworkmod is good:) but if you want something specific you have to do the following before you connect your phone. file>custom recovery i believe the option is called. And locate the image file (img) for the recovery you want (AmonRA or PSFreedom for instance, these have to be downloaded you can find alternatives on google) select it and it will load into Unrevoked as Recovery: Custom or something like that. Now you can connect your phone and unrevoked will do the rest for you. Edited November 26, 2010 by Asselberghs

Guest Czuka Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 I used Unrevoke method, but how do I know did it get my phone rooted? Any tests or something?

Guest Czuka Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 So if it says in the shell "whoami: not found" this means phone was not properly rooted?
Guest crescentman Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Not sure about that on mine su fails so I didn't try whoami. So if it says in the shell "whoami: not found" this means phone was not properly rooted?
Guest Czuka Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 OK, I tried like 5 times to root it with Unrevoke and it doesn't seem to get root. Can't install Superuser app as well. I actually need root to delete some shitty stuff like Facebook or Twitter app.
Guest hendrix62 Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 properly install the drivers HBOOT uninstall htc sync and let the drivers install android sdk install usb driver and try to do it under windows xp because its windows seven bug sorry for my bad english :P
Guest Asselberghs Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 (edited) The way to check if a phone is rooted is to check if the Superuser app is present on the phone. If your rooted you have it. (your not supposed to manually install it) Edited November 28, 2010 by Asselberghs

Must be said though I´ve experienced problems with the latest unrevoked try and see if you can find unrevoked v. 3.14 Edited November 28, 2010 by Asselberghs
Guest Czuka Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 The way to check if a phone is rooted is to check if the Superuser app is present on the phone. If your rooted you have it. (your not supposed to manually install it) It installed Superuser Permissions which, for example, asked for permission to launch ConnectBot.

Must be said though I´ve experienced problems with the latest unrevoked try and see if you can find unrevoked v. 3.14 Yeah, it said "Done" and "Now there's a triumph" or something. I tried to remove some apps from ConnectBot console, but when I try to remove anything in system/app, it says "Directory not empty". I did this first: mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system So I guess it has read/write access now.
Guest Ddee Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Will this method work with an orange branded desire with a .93 bootloader?
