OK so I'm a newbie and probably being as blind as a bat but I can't find any instructions on how to root my phone. Please can anyone point me in the right direction. TIA

Your on the Desire forum so I presume your phone is a Desire.

Go to Unrevoked.com download it for your Desire.

If you are on Windows click the More Info? link, and download the HBoot drivers from the wiki.

Once HBoot drivers is installed, unzip and open Unrevoked, connect your phone and let it work it´s magic.

When it says Done, your phone is rooted.

You might experience problems, I have and I don´t know why, nothing that harmed the phone it just diden´t complete, try to find the version before that then. 3.14 IIRC IF you encounter problems.

This will also work under Linux and Mac OSX and there the HBOOT Drivers step isen´t nessesary.

Edit:

Unrevoked will root your phone and Install Clockworkmod recovery image. If you want a different one, if your new to this I guess you don´t care, clockworkmod is good:) but if you want something specific you have to do the following before you connect your phone. file>custom recovery i believe the option is called. And locate the image file (img) for the recovery you want (AmonRA or PSFreedom for instance, these have to be downloaded you can find alternatives on google) select it and it will load into Unrevoked as Recovery: Custom or something like that. Now you can connect your phone and unrevoked will do the rest for you.

I used Unrevoke method, but how do I know did it get my phone rooted? Any tests or something?

So if it says in the shell "whoami: not found" this means phone was not properly rooted?

OK, I tried like 5 times to root it with Unrevoke and it doesn't seem to get root. Can't install Superuser app as well.

I actually need root to delete some shitty stuff like Facebook or Twitter app.

The way to check if a phone is rooted is to check if the Superuser app is present on the phone. If your rooted you have it. (your not supposed to manually install it)

Does unrevoked report that the root was successful? if so and superuser isen´t there then it´s bloody strange. Must be said though I´ve experienced problems with the latest unrevoked try and see if you can find unrevoked v. 3.14

It installed Superuser Permissions which, for example, asked for permission to launch ConnectBot.

Yeah, it said "Done" and "Now there's a triumph" or something.

I tried to remove some apps from ConnectBot console, but when I try to remove anything in system/app, it says "Directory not empty". I did this first:

mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

So I guess it has read/write access now.

Will this method work with an orange branded desire with a .93 bootloader?

no, root != /system readwrite

system readwrite in normal phone operation (thats not in recovery), you need "s-off"

if you want to delete apps in system partition, you have to do it in recovery with adb, because thats (without s-off) the only way to write to system partition which is locked in normal operation of the phone
