All the googling points to posts that are earlier in the year with Modaco 2.9 ROM. Since a lot has changed and we're at official 2.1, Anyone recently unlocked one on any Custom ROM's or tried and failed?? Can you pls post where you got unlock code and which ROM was used.

It's been a while since I did mine (sept 09) but was prompted for it again after installing a custom rom a few months later. Used http://www.thephoneunlockers.com but they don't seem to do HTC Hero's on Orange anymore. Cost me £23.10 and I've still got the code e-mail they sent, so if it prompts me again I can just re-enter it without stuggling to find it or paying again.

Think they're charging around £14 for a Hero now, so might be worth getting in contact with them to see if they can still do them.

I've used several of the roms before 2.1 went official, than stuck with Paul's ever since.

Not sure how much that helps.

I use fonefunshop for all unlocking.. theres also htccode.com which is linked from Modaco, I know someone who used them and had no problems too (this was a while back).. (http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=announce&f=409&id=12)

Current price for a hero is £15, and i did my mates a few weeks ago..

You'll still need to be on a custom ROM I imagine (he was already), and the site says it doesnt work on Orange Heros (which is true unless you are on a custom rom), but it worked fine for me last year, and him as well recently.

So yeah it seems like it still works.
