Guest dhbar Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Hi Very new to this - so please go gently Bought my San Francisco about a week ago Had a few problems where it would not 'turn on' and had it replaced - but kept the original SIM New one arrived - installed SIM and tried to get some idea of the capabilities of the phone Set up My Account on Orange website and started to notice texts being sent every day Tied this down to startup times - so if I started up 3 times I had 3 paid for texts that day - the tariff is supposed to include some texts so I defintely thought all was not as it should be ! Googled the number and found a link here http://moh2005.proboards.com/index.cgi?boa...9187&page=1 where someone had the same problem The number it sent the texts to was 447800003898 So I followed the course set by the other poster and phoned Orange on 450 They have agree to change the SIM - and refunded the cost of the texts Has anyone else come across this ? If not watch out - they said this was a possible problem with the SIM Hope this helps others Cheers

Guest dhbar Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Weird. Had you installed any software on the mobile aside from the stock stuff? Dont have any other apps installed - at all Strange
Guest m_w_clarke Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Just a thought, but have you tried ringing the number and see who is at the other end? And get them to justify as well? You could always do it with adding 141 to the start before you ring to hide your number.
Guest Frankish Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Do you have a Froyo rom? Read this http://www.xda-developers.com/android/zte-blade-call-home/
Guest gambieter Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 (edited) Do you have a Froyo rom? Read this http://www.xda-developers.com/android/zte-blade-call-home/ It's a UK mobile number, so no fearmongering please. There are more people who have the problem on Orange. Guest oh!dougal Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Do you have a Froyo rom? Read this http://www.xda-developers.com/android/zte-blade-call-home/ FFS that was the stuff that HAD to be removed to get the cell-radio working with Froyo. Froyo has NEVER succeeded in making that call (from anywhere outside China, anyway). It was a security measure on the pre-prototype rom. If it failed to make that call, it shut down the cell-radio. The whole shebang was neutered to get Froyo connected to the cellular networks. Its REMOVAL has been fully documented here. More than once. It is bizarre that people will pass on such rumours without doing even elementary checking. Really, should know better ... :P

If not watch out - they said this was a possible problem with the SIM ... It would seem to be a nearly unique problem, from the scarcity of Google hits for that number. My expectation would be that it might be something to do with Orange's "activation" process. Or rather a problem during that process. Did you get a sequence of texts of the "Welcome to Orange" style, one of which was a "Sim Update" that asked you to delete it and restart the phone? It wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that all their phones were supposed to send an SMS at startup to confirm to Orange that the phone had been successfully activated (it couldn't send it before activation), and, after it succeeded, the task would be deleted. However, if it never got the confirmation that the text had arrived (or didn't respond to it properly), then it would continue retrying. Might be worth asking Orange to check that the phone activation process was showing up as having fully completed. But overall, I suspect its a software cock-up rather than a conspiracy. I wonder therefore whether a full data wipe (under Privacy amongst Settings) might be helpful? Certainly, unlocking the phone to a different network, a full data wipe and reflashing the rom (even the standard Orange one) ought to stop the misbehaviour, but customers shouldn't need to do that. Meanwhile, I think that as a customer, you need to make sure that Orange have recorded your complaint properly. In the old days, you might have sent them a recorded delivery letter. These days, I expect you should be asking the call centre for a "Call Reference Number" or its equivalent, and recording in your diary the date and exact time of your call or calls. "Your call may be recorded for security and training purposes" - ask them if they would ensure that they have a recording!
Guest toy_car_uk Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Hi all, Looks like my SF is a bit special too, or more to the point its sim card Did you get a sequence of texts of the "Welcome to Orange" style, one of which was a "Sim Update" that asked you to delete it and restart the phone? Yes to all I wonder therefore whether a full data wipe (under Privacy amongst Settings) might be helpful? Certainly, unlocking the phone to a different network, a full data wipe and reflashing the rom (even the standard Orange one) ought to stop the misbehaviour, but customers shouldn't need to do that. Done this as part of installing BladeVillain 1.0.1 problem present on both stock rom and BladeVillian 1.0.1 after full data wipe

"Your call may be recorded for security and training purposes" - ask them if they would ensure that they have a recording! Id still suggest letter via recorded post, or at least email the customer services team directly. I had an issue recently with T-Mobile and asked them to retrieve their recordings. It transpires that unlike some companies who record every call, T-Mobile choose to record 1 in 50 calls randomly, and only usually when training a new member of staff. In which case the calls are then only kept on record for a maximum of 30 days. For true proof of sending in a complaint, stick to recorded post. :P
Guest toy_car_uk Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) Should also point out, I can find no sign of this SMS being sent on the phone its self. Its only when checking my account on-line on orange web site I noticed this number. could it be affecting more sim cards or handsets and people just don't know? Edited December 1, 2010 by toy_car_uk
Guest toy_car_uk Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 have you tried ringing the number and see who is at the other end? Tried it off net and got the voice of a posh lady stating "sorry the number you have dialled is not available" Tried it on net, get a deadline tone.
Guest Lew247 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) http://moh2005.proboards.com/index.cgi?boa...9187&page=1 It would seem to be something to do with Orange Edited December 1, 2010 by Lew247
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Yes, probably is, because they've been showing up on the "data usage" part of the orange your account, for me. However they are displaying for me as free, but something has eaten my credit (and Im not sure if thats what it is)
Guest Yuccaman Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Yes, probably is, because they've been showing up on the "data usage" part of the orange your account, for me. However they are displaying for me as free, but something has eaten my credit (and Im not sure if thats what it is) It appears I am on this list too.... Although I don't appear to send a text every reboot, possibly cos I am in a signal area absolutely garbage for Orange.... My texts also show as 'free', but I reckon they are being taken out of the free £10 airtime I had credited which was down to about £2.50 a day or two ago (and probably now less than that !!!) Had 16 texts in all on the Orange Account page but I know i have booted more times than that as I often switch the phone off rather than letting it sleep.... On the phone to Orange in the morning I think, not that I'll stick with Orange long term, but want to ensure I get value for my free airtime and £10 top-up I still have to put on !!!!!
Guest Yuccaman Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Do you have WaveSecure installed? Nope, should have mentioned that, seeing as I had read the other thread where that was being blamed.... I rooted, unlocked and went to flibblesan's 2.2 R9b ROM within the first couple of days.... Just checked the "credit" again and now down to £2.24 (and found where I had noted it before at £2.44 a couple of days ago)....

Well.... l have just spoken to two different people at Orange and they want to send me a new phone.... I tried to refuse but they have already dispatched the activity and a replacement phone will arrive tomorrow, so will turn that away..... Their diagnostics told then my handset was faulty, even though they couldn't run anything as I have no signal on the phone :( Trying an experiment now by having the Orange sim in an much older handset and will see if that generates an additional text, whilst having a PAYG Tesco sim in the sanfran and seeing if the balance drops on that after booting... Not sure it will prove anything as the phone with the Orange sim in it now is about 8 years old !!!!

Still waiting since last Monday. I expect my Agent read a different script to your Agent :( Anyway, found an old phone lying around later on yesterday and put the Orange sim in that and switched it off and on a few times and what do you know, another 3 texts were sent.... Put a mate's O2 PAYG sim into the sanfran and not a sausage on that using up the credit though numerous reboots.... Considered ringing Orange again today but tbh I can't really be arsed.... GiffGaff SIM is in the post and I will add my Orange Top-Up and donate to Comic Relief to get it to go to a worthy cause and then dump the Orange sim....
